Is it annoying when people bump old threads, even when they're just being encouraging

Is it annoying when people bump old threads, even when they're just being encouraging

  • I could care less

  • I really hate it

  • It's frustrating but I can deal with it

  • I am so glad that people do this

  • I don't mind as long as people are encouraging others

  • I don't mind as long as people add something to the conversation

  • It gets on my nerves BIG TIME!

  • I wish people would stop doing this

  • Old threads should remain dead

  • Why is this such a big deal to people? It isn't to me!

I think it's fine if someone posts something that did not receive an answer and bumps it to get an answer...

or...

someone has something to add to make an answer more complete, or to ask the OP more questions to answer better that's totally cool too..

but..

one day I came onto CF and there were about 6 threads all w/ just about the same topic that were bumped w/ only the word "bump" in them..

and i read each one.. and the same person had "bump"ed them before w/ no comments in between. I think that's forcing topics to the top when no one has intrest in them and I think that's annoying.

My $.02

Carina, I'm guilty of that. I've asked to make one or more of the Baptist/Anabaptist FAQ threads sticky because the same questions end up being asked by someone new about once a month, and I have to go looking for them again.

Sorry. If we can't get a sticky thread, I probably should just collect the links somewhere.

Liz,

I think your right.. one of those should be made a sticky (and maybe some of the other similiar ones combined into it)!

Can we find a moderator to help w/ that? It's easier, faster, and takes up less "front page" than re-bumping.

I will try to answer all the questions/comments here. :)

Bumping can be good and bad.

If it's a subject that needs to be seen by as many members as possible then yes sometimes it is warranted. Sometimes a good bump also will get a thread back on the right track for discussion.

Sometimes though some members do bump out of boredom and you can tell it by the way they post but the bad thing is that they might send new threads to the bottom that needs attention/answering which can be aggraviating to other members as well as staff. I work the teen forum also and we do have a couple of members who are guilty of that and on the most part it aggravates the other members.

Some members have been known to bump to boost their post count which can be aggraviating to other members.

As for the stickys go it really depends on the subject. We do sometimes get requests for stickys that are not needed and if we do sticky everything members ask sometimes the first page could very well be full with them. Also many times members don't read stickys like they should and ignore them.
Staff also gets complaints at times for how many stickys are in some forums.

As for getting something sticky a member would need to contact a staff member from that forum and the staff will discuss and decide whether it is warranted it or not. No harm in asking.

If someone has something new and interesting to add, then it should not matter how old the thread had become. Personally though, I think that any thread with no posts in 6 months should be zapped. But since they are still there, if someone want to post to one, fine with me.
