I was talking to my disipleship leader at church and he brought up the point,

"Are the things in your life an idol, or a tool?"

I had to say wow. Wow for two reasons, one being that I had come upon this same things recently and secondly, it is very profound in its simplicity.

The things in our life; sports, friends, school, whatever, they can be two things: A tool or an idol.

Idol- What happens here is that this is the thing that someone focuses on, basically, putting it before God. They probaly do not worship it in the sense that we use the word, but it is a high priority.

Tool- This is taking that same thing and using it for God. Lets say I am a pilot(a real incident, someone else) and I am getting my liscence. This has the possiblity of being two things, a tool or an idol. If it were to be an idol this would mean I try to take that as my first priority.

A tool would using this to bring people closer to God. It would be doing missions or simply helping out people who need help.

Pray for your life to be a tool.

I think this fits :) . I read a true story about this guy who had a real nice bike. He never ever got it wet. It was always in his house. Well he was at church and the pastor (at the end ) asked if any one had something they put before God and to give it to God. Well he said he ran home to get his bike. The reason he ran home was he did not want doubt catch up with him. The sec he got the bike out side it started to rain. The pastor let then (later) take back now that they new who should come 1st.

I'm with sharky, I would love to learn more...

LOL I read such a story somewhere myself. The lesson is so true. As Christians we are not always required to give up everything we love. Jut to put God first and be WILLING to give up anything for Him. God does not want or need our possesions. He only wants out hearts.

Another true story i heard recently. A pastor started a house church and told us that he got his house from an auction and got it at a low price. He also got the projector that he uses for worship service at an auction too-again at a low price. The point he was making is that, if something requires him to give up these things, it will be easier for him to give them up if they're cheaper and didn't sacrifice that much to acquire them. I thought that was a good idea...i'm not gonna splurge on getting a dream car now...:)
