Is it against Christianity to worry about jinxing yourself by saying something?

Does the concept of saying something - or not saying something - for the fear of jinxing oneself against Christianity?

For example - a couple days ago I said something about my mom - a good thing - but then I worried that after saying it, the very thing I didn't want to have happen to her, did. It's like a strange coincidence.

Is this jinxing concept from Satan, actually? Is it some sort of superstitious thing? Is the idea that if we don't say something - or do say something, something bad will happen - is this a concept that is wrong for Christians to think?

hmm.. I kind of see where you're coming from with this, because sometimes I get thoughts like this too. It might be superstitious.
I think it's best to discourage these thoughts.. remember, ultimately, God is in control. Events won't happen just because you said a word, or left a word out, etc. Of course sometimes I get thoughts like .."what if there's some weird natural law that we just don't know" etc.. lol..
What I've found helps me is just praying afterwards. Don't indulge in these thoughts.. just forget them, cast them away, and then pray.. for example, if you said something about your mom (like in your example), and then you feel nervous, just pray for your mom ask God to keep her safe, etc. Ask Jesus to cover her in His precious Blood. Say a decade of the Rosary or something. But most of all..just don't stress out too much or give these thoughts lots of importance. Because IMO it is just superstition. There's nothing in Christianity about "jinxes".

I'm not sure but I believe that worrying about jinxing yourself would be put under the sin of superstition.

2111 Superstition is the deviation of religious feeling and of the practices this feeling imposes. It can even affect the worship we offer the true God, e.g., when one attributes an importance in some way magical to certain practices otherwise lawful or necessary. To attribute the efficacy of prayers or of sacramental signs to their mere external performance, apart from the interior dispositions that they demand, is to fall into superstition.41

I would not worry about it to much it, it is a silly custom and is not going to harm someone much
unless you really believe in it, I do not want to sound harsh, but the fact that you worry so much about it seems you worry to much about this thing. do not put so much stock in it

Believe it or not, I forgot about this entire thread today I'm having trouble with the problem of putting stock into this jinxing thing. Something miraculous happened today and I am worried that if I say it, it will "jinx" - but I'm not supposed to believe it. And I shouldn't believe it. Heck - it's so miraculous that I want to write a thread about it but I'm afraid

You won't jinx anything. That's silly superstition. If I take a dead cat to the cemetary at midnight when an evil person has been buried and say "corpse follow devil, cat follow corpse, warts follow cat away with ye!", will that cure warts?

it's a good question actually because sometimes it really might seem like we jinxed something. But i think that if we believe we have the power to make bad things happen (usually jinxes are referring to making bad things hapen, arent they?) then we are trying to do the impossible, to remove God's authority and become our own authority.

I may have confused you more now, but what i mean to say is, bad stuff happens and good stuff happens. I know people who talk lots about good stuff and then either something or nothing happens....equally i know people who talk like 'please God don't let this happen to my mother' etc..and if something does, they will think they had the power to create the circumstances to make something bad happen, when in fact, they didn't have anything to do with it.

Now i may have REALLY confused you LOL!

I'm trying to say 'don't be anxious about this'.

well...to answer DD 2008:

it has to do with my dad - he told me that he has loosened up about the kind of person I marry - I don't know if he means that I don't have to marry a Muslim but I do get that vibe but I could tell that something was different about him. He used to tell me I had to marry someone of his culture - now he doesn't even care (it's because he has gotten frustrated with his own) - he is starting to prefer me to find someone from here or elsewhere if I want to - this floored me - I thought that he was not QUITE the same as he was a few years ago but I didn't want to bring the subject up.

I don't think this quite means I can be a practicing Catholic while living therebut this is a huge, huge change. I mean, really, really huge. I mean, this might mean that I don't really HAVE to move out and live on my own to date a non-Muslim??? that would really prevent a lot of loneliness that I DON'T need to feel.

That's why it feels too good to be true (but I don't think it's a trick - I really think he means it)

Ladybug, hahaha believe it or not, I was worried about telling people about some of my little 'miracles' for the same reason! I actually thought that if I told people, God would take them away or something. But.. now I see the ONLY danger of telling people about miraculous events, is if their reaction is wrong and they cause you to doubt. However - I don't see this happening at OBOB. When I started telling people about things that happened to me, *nothing* changed soo..don't worry!! and that's awesome that something miraculous happened, praise God!if you want to share it, then share it for His glory

aw that is great to hear!! seriously, that's really good news. Im sure you didn't jinx anything just keep on praying! It might be God who is slowly changing your dad's heart I hope everything goes well..

I'm so scared that one day this will all backfire - can you pray for me that my fears will just DISSIPATE? I mean, what if one day he says that I "have" to get married because it's "getting late" and he changes his mind on all this? I'm scared to death. Something tells me that this won't happen - but this is just something that absolutely floors me. I've seen signs of his mellowing - but I was always scared that it was an illusion. I always thought that there were definite prohibitions because there used to be SO many horrible fights about this.
