Is it a sin to watch American Idol?

I don't feel that there is anything "sinful" about American Idol. In general, it is a talent show and you get to see the good and the bad of it...and the critics speaking their minds about what it *really* takes to make it nowadays in the entertainment industry.

Sure, there are plenty of not-so-kosher (and some that are downright disgusting) reality shows out there...but AI isn't one of them. To me, it would be like watching young men trying out to make it in the NFL....of course, we don't get to see what the competition is really like for them...but this *is* reality. So, if the show sparks your fancy...watch it. If not....you've got the remote...so turn the channel to something else.

As for Wife Swap...I was worried about that too, when it first came on. Then, I watched out of curiosity. Now, I try to catch nearly every episode. I have to say, that I, for one have learned some very valuable things from watching it (and yes, had plenty of laughs along the way too). A show like that makes you appreciate what you have and helps to also give you some insight into how different some peoples lives can be. It sparks an awareness and appreciation for the differences between all of us. And that, in my humble opinion, is a positive thing!

Now, it's to the point that I can jokingly say to my kids and hubby...I'm signing up for that show! LOL and they all say "no...PLEASE don't do it! We want you!!" Hehehe and that's a pretty good feeling to know...that you're just not doing too shabby after all!

It's blasphemy! ;) American IDOL. Think about it. What does scripture say about IDOLATRY, and that includes idolizing people - not just making images/idols.

I've never watched it, but kinda know what it would be about from ads & previews. Just not interested in it. Complete worldliness and exaltation of flesh if you ask me.

Now I sound like a raving legalistic fundamentalist. I'm far from it. But some (a lot) of TV shows just seem so senseless, useless, and dirty.
Of course I know some "Christians" have watched Howard Stern too, which I think IS blasphemous... so don't flame me too bad here. It might just be personal opinion on my part.

I do not think it is a sin. Is that the one where people sing and there are judges who decide if they are good enough to go to the next level?
I don't like that show because they are so mean to the contestants.

O.k part of me is being humurous when I ask this and part of me is not. I was reading where someone mentioned AI on the "why" thread. I have watched it before, and in fact was gonna watch last night but forgot it came on. Anyone want to fill me in:D Every time I watch it, I Feel like I shouldn't, but can point my finger on why it is a sin, if it is a sin!

Do you ever feel guilty for watching/ listening to something even though you really don't have any justification to feel guilty. Do you think sometimes we look for things to be wrong or sinful b/c it's of the world? Does anyone else feel convicted when they watch these reality shows:confused:

I don't feel guilty . They aren't a sin for me .

I enjoy AI . Simon is a hoot .
I like to watch BigBrother because it shows human reactions and how they maintain their ethics or how they discard them at will only to think that they can take them up again .

Sometimes God may have us abstain from a particular activity-- not because the activity itself is wrong, but because it may cause temptation for us in an area in which you may be weak. For instance, Mercy, you said American Idol reminds you of your 'old days'. Well in that case, it is possible God doesn't want you to watch the show to avoid causing difficulties for you in an area.

Personally, I think the show is hysterical.

Also, it's interesting to me how many Christians make it to the finals. Many of those who do well got all of their 'experience' singing in church.

It's actually about personal conviction on things like these. Personally I look forward to seeing the premiere tonight.

I believe that there are things that are a sin for everyone, but as we grow in Christ sometimes we feel our own personal convictions.

I'll say this... if God's Spirit convicts you of something, it's best to heed the conviction... been there, done that, bad mistake. :sorry:

No, it's not a sin to watch American Idol. Why would it be??

It could be. Perhaps it's not a sin to you, but if God told me not to watch it, you'd bet it'd be sin to me.

Conscience= 'with knowledge' because God has given you a conscience, you have to answer to that, as the Bible doesn't say "thou shalt not watch american idol'.

Hmm...

You have time to watch a TV program that raises someone to the pinnacle of Idol and wonder whether it is idol worship?

Or

You have so much time to fritter away, guarding the time that you watch TV jealously, that the time itself becomes idle worship?

:D Just Kidding!

I personally am not comfortable with American Idol and the similar shows we get in the UK. People who cannot sing well or who have unusual voices or appearances are held up to ridicule for entertainment and the judges, sometimes after the person has left, mock the person and put them down. I used to like watching these shows, but I have just come away from a year of being mocked and ridiculed by others for being the way I am and it hurts. For me, it is definitely sin - I watched an episode of American Idol a few months ago and it caused me so much distress that I am steering clear of it from now on and have prayed for all of the people hurt by it.

I watched American Idol for 30 seconds last night and my IQ dropped 30 points.

Simon's remarked about these three BEAUTIFUL young women (who sang beautifully) and said they looked like "three fat Jessica Simpsons"
