O.k part of me is being humurous when I ask this and part of me is not. I was reading where someone mentioned AI on the "why" thread. I have watched it before, and in fact was gonna watch last night but forgot it came on. Anyone want to fill me in:D Every time I watch it, I Feel like I shouldn't, but can point my finger on why it is a sin, if it is a sin!

Do you ever feel guilty for watching/ listening to something even though you really don't have any justification to feel guilty. Do you think sometimes we look for things to be wrong or sinful b/c it's of the world? Does anyone else feel convicted when they watch these reality shows:confused:

Truth be told, some of the reality shows I won't get near with a ten-foot pole. I've never been convicted about AI. We didn't watch the first season but started watching the second season. We enjoy it. I'm looking forward to the actual show to get underway though. There is something that bothers me about laughing at folks who seriously believe they are good singers.

Y'know, when I'm convicted of something, I work on giving it up and I've discovered that the things I am convicted of, other Christians are not and sometimes vice versa. For example, my children do not watch tv everyday and, when they do, it is only channels with no commercials. Other parents have told me I'm too strict. However, I grew up in a household where materialism was a god and I know that is one way God is helping me turn this household around.

Maybe you should give up watching this show? God may have a real reason why this show may not be a good thing for you.

Thank God He invented the "off" button. I need my eyes to drive and stuff. :D

On a more serious note, I think OreGal hit it pretty much on the head. The trick is to be able to discern between condemnation and conviction. If it's conviction follow it and use that off button, but if it's condemnation rebuke it and enjoy the show.

I don't know...I think we do sometimes look for things to be wrong or sinful b/c it's of the world. Sometimes, that, when taken to the extreme, can lend someone to totally alienate non-Christians. I suppose the answer may lie within the scripture below. Take alcohol for example...for some Christians...its permissible...it will not lead them into sin; for others...it sets them off.

The Believer's Freedom 1 Cor 10

23“Everything is permissible”–but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible”–but not everything is constructive. 24Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others. 25Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience, 26for, “The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it.”[c]

27If some unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience. 28But if anyone says to you, “This has been offered in sacrifice,” then do not eat it, both for the sake of the man who told you and for conscience' sake[d]– 29the other man's conscience, I mean, not yours. For why should my freedom be judged by another's conscience? 30If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?

31So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 32Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God– 33even as I try to please everybody in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.

Boy, wouldn't that cut down on the number of posts here. We'd all be blind as bats  (admitting I thought the guest judge last night was 'kinda' cute but had no idea who he was...fortunately, I was sitting next to my hubby is far, far cuter...or, um, should I say 'more handsome'...hubby does not like being called cute)

ummm...let's see...recap of last nights show...

youth pastor - good - gets yellow ticket
lots of terrible singers
lots of wide eyes and perplexed looks by judges
good singers including one mom who sold her wedding ring to be there (and hubby not thrilled she's there)
more bad singers
lots of singers who are very, very full of themselves including one or two who were given this gift by 'God' and are shocked when they don't make it.

That's about it in a nutshell...

I feel bad sometimes when I'm laughing, because it's hurtful to laugh at someone. Mostly I feel embarassed for them.

I think, for me, any sinning comes in the gossiping about people I don't even know afterwards. That's not cool. :sigh:

I don't know. "Wife swap" just conjured up images of some really sick stuff. I told my wife, "we're not watching that!"

A couple of weeks later, I hear her howling in the living room. She's laughing so hard she has tears in her eyes.

I walked in and "Wife Swap" is on. I stood up as I watched it for a few minutes to prove that I would walk out at the first sign of some sick ordeal, but I eventually sat down and ended up laughing alongside my wife. Sad. I know. But true.

I've only seen bits and pieces of American Idol. Just doesn't "do" anything for me personally (not entertaining).

I don't think it's a sin. I think it's a really badly made show. I feel so bad for the really bad singers. Why don't they just stop and walk away with what little dignity they have left? LOL I mean, can't they tell by the looks on the judges' faces or the laughing..that perhaps singing is not really what God wants them to do. I would not say that show is a guilty pleasure of mine..but i have watched it.

Well, I'm such an admittedly fanatic about Clay Aiken that I keep watching the show hoping I'll see anyone else near his level.

So far no good.

There was a really good article about Clay in Christian Planet this month. :) It's NICE to see a Christian standing up for his values in Hollywood and succeeding.

Ive never had a conviction about it at all. Although I don't care much for reality TV anyway because it's scripted and nothing is "real" when the cameras start rolling. I like AI though, especially the beginning parts where they feature those awful singers :D . I think it's scripted too, especially the beginning, but it's still funny to watch. JMO.
