Apparently that seems meanspirited to you, but if two denominations disagree over something as significant as the meaning of a sacrament, wouldn't we be forced to conclude that at least one of them IS wrong?I'm still confused and now picking one church over the other to take the Eucharist seems like I'm saying one church is right and the other is wrong... that's just wrong because its not true. **sigh**
Well learn the teachings of each Church and that will help.I'm still confused and now picking one church over the other to take the Eucharist seems like I'm saying one church is right and the other is wrong... that's just wrong because its not true. **sigh**
You said you entreat the Holy Spirit to change the gifts.
This is what a Catholic priest does.
Me thinking about stepping on Jesus is not a sinful human mindset. If a person believes that the host is the body and blood of Jesus then the utmost respect must be given to it.
As to calling it cannibalism...oddly enough the first Christians were called cannibals because it was heard that they ATE the body and drank the blood.
I see that you're Orthodox.First off respectfully, I am Orthodox. The difference is Roman Catholicism has applied a title to it, we do not. Well of course, we are going to respect it. But you're talking about "stepping on Jesus". That's inappropriate and next I would expect you to ask which part of Jesus is being consumed. The difference is that this was a new concept back in those days, but now in our times, people still insist on calling it cannibalism. I just call it what it was, irreverence and inability to follow the Lord's Commandment at the Last Supper.
So this discussion ends here.
I'll just repeat that if we go into a church, we must follow the rules of THAT church...whether or not we agree with them.
I picked up on those three words because those three words merit discussing. You said something that I view as a poor view of Communion and so I focused on them. And then you bowed out.I see that you're Orthodox.
We're just talking....
You seem to have picked up on 3 words that I posted and can't seem to get away from that.

Great idea.Yes, but opens the door for other questions, but for another time.
Thank you everyone for your help, I will think about what was said, pray, then leave it all in the God's hands.
If you wanted to seriously discuss dropping the host and stepping on Jesus, then that's what you should have concentrated on - but in a serious way.I picked up on those three words because those three words merit discussing. I agree with you though on following the rules of a church even if you do not agree.

I've taught our faith to children that were making their first communion and they had to be taught to honor the host the way the Catholic church does.
I know that your faith does not have the practice of celebrating the first communion a child makes. I'm sure they are taught about this in Sunday lessons, or in some other way. But honor for the host must be taught...it does not come naturally to most kids.
They don't know about abstract ideas and must understand by "pictures and images".
I'm sorry you don't agree with this method,,but as I've been saying all along:
When we enter into a church bldg...we should honor the rules of that denomination.
Peace and blessings
you just spoke about stepping on Jesus in a mocking sort of way.And what would have been a serious way then? I'm pretty sure I was serious. Maybe it was just me growing up as a kid, but I understood what Communion was a kid and I did not have to be taught how to approach and respect it by means of imagery or pictures. There are certain things which call for imagery of such, and I do not think Communion is one of them. And again, I agree on respecting the rules of the church.

First of all, I'm not catholic but do know all the doctrine and am involved with that church.
If the CC believes in transubstantiation, then that's what has to be taught. Personally, I believe in the Real Presence. In the idea of transubstantiation it's as if one is eating Jesus....yes, literally. So the kids are taught to be careful not to drop the host, since it is now given in the hand. Very traditional Catholics do not care for the idea of receiving the host in the hand....but the young are taught this this method.
For them it's a very serious teaching so I don't care to make light of it....I understand their position and respect it. We don't all have to agree on everything but we could still respect our beliefs...even those we find rather difficult to grasp.
My last post regarding this:It’s not mocking. You were the one who brought up that imagery which should have never been mentioned anyway, in the first place. And respectfully stepping on Jesus is making light of it, which is what you had mentioned. When you say your eating Jesus, it’s an improper way to look at it and talk about it.
The two churches I attend is Catholic and Lutheran... and have been taking the Eucharist at both services... so am I committing a sin by doing so, and if I am which which commandment am I breaking??
I’ll respect it’s their belief, but I won’t agree with it because if someone tells me I’m stepping on Jesus, I’m going to advise them to have respect for the Body and Blood rather than just calling it Jesus. My last post regarding this:
THIS IS WHAT CATHOLICS BELIEVE.
Who are you to say if it is right or wrong?
To THEM it is right.
It IS having respect !I’ll respect it’s their belief, but I won’t agree with it because if someone tells me I’m stepping on Jesus, I’m going to advise them to have respect for the Body and Blood rather than just calling it Jesus.
I agree and thank you.All points were made already.
