  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is it a sin to listen?

If it was, do you think that this subforum (which is intended for use by those who like the music, not those wishing to debate its moral position) would be allowed on a Christian Forum site?

It's a matter of personal conviction.

Is it a sin to listen to secular music? I didn't know where exactly to post this.

It's no more sinful to listen to "secular" music than it is to eat at a "secular" restaurant, watch "secular" television, or drive a "secular" car...

There is no Biblical precedent against this. God wants to be glorified. There are many bands out there, some you've heard of, some you haven't, that aren't signed to a CCM label that are comprised of musicians who have a relationship with Jesus...

I wanted to post a reply to this in the Christian only section. (I am a Christian but my icon is church/other because so many Christians give Christians a bad name.)

Here is the post:

Is it OK to listen to non-Christians?

Is it OK to shop at non-Christian stores and deal with non-Christians?

Jesus said "the children of this world
are (in their generation) wiser than the children of light". That would include (if you don't mind me taking scripture out of context) business, music, movies etc. etc.

I dont think it is, my dad says different though. he says music effects people mentally. you may not notice it now but eventually you will find yourself doing something you wouldnt normally be doing.. but it is yet to do anything to me...

I'd have to respectfully disagree with your dad on this. I will never buy into this propaganda that "music (affects) people mentally", causing him/her to "(do) something you wouldn't normally be doing".

That's a cop-out, and it's been drilled into the heads of Christian congregations all over the world.

As I've opined many times before in similar threads on this subject, God is not confined within the walls of the CCM community.

The fact that an artist's or band's music is available from your Local Christian Retail Store doesn't mean it inherently has God's stamp of approval on it.

Conversely, the fact that an artist's or band's music is available at your Local Secular Retail Store doesn't mean it inherently carries God's stamp of disapproval...

As Christians, we should exercise our common sense and examine each artist individually instead of just saying, "Oh, that band is secular, so I better not listen to them!"

If you think it's sinful to listen to secular music then don't listen to it. But don't tell others they can't listen to it because the Bible says nothing on the subject of secular music.

I scrolled back through the thread to see if you might have been referring to someone else besides me here, but I couldn't find one.

So, I'm assuming you're talking to me. If so, please note that I did not "tell others they (can't) listen to because the Bible says nothing on the subject of secular music".

I feel quite the contrary, as a matter of fact, and my post(s) reflect those feelings. Or, at least I thought they did until you posted your response.

Just to be clear on the subject, I think it's perfectly fine for Christians to listen to secular music because, as I said in my previous posts, God is not confined within the walls of CCM, there is no Biblical precedent against it, and each artist should be examined individually, not based on what kind of record label he/she is signed to...
