Jonah 3:3-4 “So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days' journey in breadth. 4 Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's journey. And he called out, ‘Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!’”

Read the annals of the Christian history and you will discover that central to every move of God is the preaching of His Word. God is pleased to unite the preaching of His Word with His saving power.

In both times that Jonah was told by God to go, he was called to proclaim or cry out against the wicked people in his message. It was purely a verbal proclamation (Romans 10:14-17). For the people of Nineveh, Jonah’s proclamation was perhaps a bit odd. You have to understand that these people were idol worshippers to the max. They were probably scared because the gods they worshipped were over just a section of land or a facet of life. The God that Jonah proclaimed was the God above all, including their local gods.

You must really understand what is being said here. These were pagan, unbelieving people who had no knowledge of God before them (save general revelation—Rom. 1:18-20). They had no Bible to read and no previous ministry of direct divine revelation (as far as we know). The people of Nineveh heard the preaching of one man declaring the Law and judgment of God against sinners, and they responded in faith to the proclamation.

Jonah’s faithfulness to God after his re-commissioning is another biblical example of how we are to evangelize. Do you trust in God enough to allow His Word and Holy Spirit to win converts into the kingdom? Or does your proclamation of Jesus Christ mirror a business model, a theme park, or some other man-made entity?
