I did a study today with a friend of mine about hell and we read about how it has been misinterpreted to be eternal due to all the references where it says "forever" in the Bible...

This concept paints an ugly picture of God... a person sins for 60, 70, max 80 years then spends eternity in hell for it... It just doesn't match the merciful character of the Lord.

This is a great video that answered all these questions perfectly! I was so happy when i saw it!

Please share it with others..

Please pick up the book Four Views of Hell which outlines views from Walvoord (eternal- literal interpretation), Crockett (eternal- metaphorical interpretation), Hayes (purgatory), and Pinnock (annihilationism (what you are supporting above)). It is a good treatment of all views, and will help flesh out what Scripture says. (Note who uses Scripture more, and whether they rely on reason and philosophy more, though...)

The question is not whether Hell is forever or not. Hell is definitely eternal. The question is how long do sinners reside in Hell.

Satan, the Antichrist, and the Beast are all explicitly said to be punished in Hell for eternity (Rev 20:10). These are the only individuals said to reside there forever. The duration (eternal or not) is not stated for others. The assumption has been that other sinners meet the same fate due to their obstinance to remain in sin.

But, Hell is said to last for eternity, without a doubt.

One thing that must be understood before one can look at the issue of Hell is God's view toward sin. We, in our human philosophies and emotions, say that eternal torment is inconsistent with God's love. But, is a limited time in hell consistent with God's abhorence of sin? Think about the thing in the world you hate the most. The torture of children is mine. Multiply the feeling you have for this an infinite amount (as God's righteousness is infinite), and that is God's view of sin. Now, is eternal hell contrary to God's love?

The problem of hell today is reliant heavily on some people's misconception of God's view of sin.

In Him,
Dave

The problem I see with this rationale for why Hell should be endless is that if the sin were so dreadful to God that eternal torment would be necessary, one must ask why this didn't preclude Him from creating beings in the first place that He knew, in advance, would be so incredibly sinful and would do such horrendous things once He created them.

It just seems to me rather masochistic to create something that one finds so objectionable that it would deserve eternal torment. If it's that bad to Him, He could spare Himself by simply not creating them.

I could understand it if I thought God were less than Omniscient and as a result couldn't foresee how awful things would turn out as a result of His creation, but, in reality, this is not the case with Him. He knew going into it. And He proceeded anyway.
