  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

But with that view, despite how wrong I think you are, still leaves God as having free will to choose anything (which was my point). You claim He can't sin, not because He can't choose it, but because you define every action as sinless for God, regardless of what that action is.

And that takes us directly into one of the thorniest of philosophical cum theological questions.

What makes anything right or good?

Why do we say God is good?

If we say it is good and right to do God's will, is it because God always wills what is good? Or is it because, whatever God wills, it is, by definition, good.

Is something "good" because God wills it?

Or is something "good" intrinsically, in its own nature, whether or not God identifies it as "good"?

If it is not God's will that makes something "good", how do we know it is good? How does God know what is good?

If we judge what is "good" what are we saying about God when we say "God is good"? Are we not saying that we judge God to be good because he meets our human criteria of what it means to be good? Is that not subjecting God to fallible human judgment?

You can get into wonderful topsy-turvy arguments trying to sort it all out. A great topic for General Apologetics.

Perhaps God is good in the same way the father of the Prodigal son is Good. He loves us and gives us our freedom, and even after we have squandered our inheritance he'll still take us back with open arms.

Amen!

Though it doesn't really answer the question.

Why do we call that father's actions "good"?

The elder brother did not think welcoming the prodigal back was "good". He thought it was foolish and unfair.

What makes him wrong?
