So for the past year or so I've been playing Game Of War. My religion had been getting weak until the past few days so I had never thought to ask this. So I was wondering if Game Of War is Anti-Christian.The title of the game is self-explanatory, though I will add some things to this.

  • You train, lose and kill troops in the game
  • It has become rather an addiction (though with that said, I have found myself playing it for less time than I used to for the past few weeks)
  • You send your hero off to kill monsters
  • The hero can be executed and you can execute hero's
  • Progress basically relies on real-life money, which I admit I have fallen to
I have met a Christian (Catholic) on the game who still plays it and have met two people who used to be Christians until someone in their families died. One of these two people told me this a few days ago after they asked me to pray for their mother who was hospitalised* (they said that they had stopped being Christian after something happened)*. I have tried to promote Christianity since then and they have listened (I didn't force it on them as it is not right) and said some positive things* that have given a lot of hope that they may become Christian again. But then that's another story.

I am not sure whether it is Anti-Christian and will quit the game if it is.

Well God of War is based on Kratos, who is part of Greek mythology (their version of "Gods"). So in that sense its promoting greek mythology, which is obviously not christian. The important question is not is it anti-christian, but is it effecting you? Gaming by default is not a sin. Its more of a grey area. Its when a game changes you that it becomes a problem. Or if you play games all day, skip church...etc then its an idol.

By change I mean you do things you never used to do. I grew up at the start of Atari. Had most of the gaming systems, even as an adult I have a Xbox One and my gaming PC. But early on I played most games. I liked games that had realistic stuff. Like gore. So after years of playing I noticed when I would not be playing I'd pretend I was a hero in the house with a gun. But my pretending was violent. I'd pretend I shot someones eye out, blew up someone with a grenade, used a katana to chop off a persons head. Obviously games were effecting me. I wasn't going to kill anyone of course, but how I was pretending was not good.

Didn't help later in life I had a friend who also gamed that was an atheist. He swore ALOT and eventually I liked the kinds of games he did. So I started swearing more, saying wrong things about women and so on.

I never really got to play GoW, but my atheist friend did. I watched him play it. Its pretty violent and sex filled. Personally in games that have sex now I skip the sex stuff because it warps your mind.

Get yourself AS FAR AWAY as possible from that and any similar "pay for power" games. I use to play a similar game called GoodGame Empire. I wasn't much of a spender, but I know of players who shelled out easily $1,000 or more every month just to be in the upper tiers of the game. I had fun with the game since I wasn't interested in the PvP aspect of it as much, but ended up losing interest in it. Pay for Power is not gaming, but rather a way to bilk money from the more competitive individuals by preying on their egos, unfortunately.

In my opinion, its comparable to playing a game of Chess where if you lose a piece, you can buy it back as many times as you would like, if you're willing to spend the money. So whoever ends up winning or being successful is usually the one who spends the most money, whether individually or collectively(most of these games have guilds, clans, alliances, etc.).

This is why I like World of Tanks. I can play against other players usually within my skill range with similar stats, and if I choose, I can pay a monthly premium for extra perks(which don't upset the balance of the game).
