Is Final Fantasy unacceptable to play as a Christian?

First off, how about you give me some reasons you feel that it is unacceptable, since you wouldn't have made this thread unless you did.

And I want your reasons to be backed up by biblical principles.

I got none.

Aside from a random discourse about magic, witchcraft, spells, violence, etc.

That's all I got. Shrug. :sorry:

It had demon summoning too. Forgot about that one... :o

I had played it when I was younger. Alot of christians I know don't play any type of RPG because they always involve some sort of magic. If you had asked me 10 years ago I'd say there is nothing wrong with. Now....I feel diffrently. So man wordly things draw us away from God and its dangerous. People tend not to think stuff really draws us away if were "good chrisitians". But theres plenty of ways to show we get drawn away.

If I ask a gamer friend 10 questions about the bible, he gets most of them wrong. If I ask him 10 questions about random games, he gets them right. You can see where it pulls us closer to it, then to God.

I never got into RPG's...I guess it's because of where I use to live
way too many folks were into "playing games"...I got tired of being
around all that, so I was either at the library reading, walking around in the mall or watching the classic movies on Channel 46(NC)..it was one of the clearest channels
we got on our antenna (no cable.)

I was a nerdy teenager lol.

A lot of my friends were into Dungeons and Dragons and the other popular one during
that era (I can't recall the name of it at the moment.)

I would advise setting a time limit on your RPG playing, so it doesn't consume too
much of your time and you drift away from serving the Lord and helping others etc.

I never played FF before, but I have played games that involved magic. Some games were a bit dangerous because it was mostly about killing other opponents with magic and had negative messages everywhere and some really took my time away from the Lord. I still suffer from those games' 'side effects' by not being able to manage my time too well, but I did get better.

So I would say that you should not focus too much on games but rather with God. And be spiritually awake and see if these games are actually okay or harmful to your spirituality and relationship with the Lord.

I grew up playing RPGs (starting with the Ultima series in the early 1980s). My parents cautioned me against getting too interested in magic or the occult, but trusted me to use my discernment. For the most part, I felt comfortable playing games with epic fantasy or sci fi themes, but steered clear of anything overly dark or demonic.

The JRPGs like Final Fantasy often have some basis in mythology and may reference gods... something to take into consideration if you have kids. They'll certainly be exposed to mythology in school as well, so it's important to educate them about it to avoid confusion at younger ages (especially to emphasize the fact that Jesus is most assuredly NOT a myth).

I like RPGs/JRPGs (my current focus right now is Tales of Graces for the PS3), and on FF, I'm not a...huge fan. I was working on 13-1 before I gave up on it because it was testing my patience and I...get frustrated with the games. And confused.

Someone said it on the forum before, if you feel dirty/convicted/etc when playing them, then it's wrong for you.

No, however I always thought dungenons and dragons stuff was wrong because my mom took them away from me when I was young telling me not to go into that stuff and she is VERY christian. She played FF on the NES back in the day all the time. I take her judgement better that most. Also if gamers are being pulled away from god I am sure that it is not just the games that have magic in them, but games all together....like an addiction.

No, its perfectly acceptable. You should play it (apart from FF 13 because its rubbish)

In all seriousness. I play computer games as a way to relax because, after being around people all day, I need time to unwind and RPGs are my favourite. So I play a lot of Skyrim, Dragon Age, Fallout 3/New Vegas and so on. On top of that, I also table top roleplay (D&D, World of Darkness, Scion, Dark heresy etc...)

I would say to you, very lovingly, that you clearly don't take your life lessons from the role playing games (I would presume you are not running down the street chopping up hedgehogs with a 18ft sword while wearing half the contents of your grandmothers kitchen sink?), but you see them in their proper role, which is that of entertainment. For people to catagorically say these things are wrong is the worst kind of narrow-minded, idiotic, head-up-rectum style legalism that exists.

At the core, you need to have the honesty with yourself to ask this: Are these games getting in the way of your relationship with God? Do you put them first or God first? If God is first, then play the games, awesome. God doesn't mind us having nice things, as long as those things don't have us, if that makes sense?

I agree with the crux of your point.

The Advice Forum is being taken over by general theological questions, which only invites debate. As far long as I've been here (8+ years), this forum was for advice for problems/situations people were in or going through, like how to deal with a kid's lack of spiritual involvement or how to deal with nosy coworkers.

So many of the threads here probably belong somewhere else, including this one.

I love final fantasy. I completed number 7 years ogo. I currently have number 12 but have absolutely no time to play it. Which ones are you all playing now?

None at the moment. I've finished them all though.

The only ones I didn't care for were 2 and 9 and the online ones.

Do you not fancy starting one up again then? I haven't played many of them I don't think I've completed any but 7 but I do love them. It's really hard to find time isn't it. Gosh if you've done them all I wonder how long the total game play was lol

You know, I never understood dungeons and dragons. I hear it is the thing that made you a 10th level sorcerer… What's that supposed to mean?

In any case, If the game makes you feel bad don't play it. The same can be said with a lot of things.
