  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is drinking a sin?

Drinking might be bad for health if it goes out of control.

But a man should not be prohibited from drinking by any stringent law.

I would like to post some funny quotes on drinking to cheer you up buddy. Take that another bottle from the fridge open and ready right now :D

Electricity is actually made up of extremely tiny particles called electrons, that you cannot see with the naked eye unless you have been drinking.

When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

The trouble with jogging is that the ice falls out of your glass. :)

My Grandmother is over eighty and still doesn't need glasses. Drinks right out of the bottle. ;)

You have such a distorted view of Christianity if that is where your question is directed to. I do not know whether to laugh or to feel pity for your misundertandings. I have seen many such ignorant assumptions. Ignorant is not derogatory. It just defines your lack of knowledge about Christianity.

Going to hell is overly stated. How about the rest of the message: salvation. Does that count for something? That is the message that Christ told us to spread. He did not tell us to go preach hellfire. He did however, want us to tell you of the implications of not being saved. But, that seems to be the only thing that some of you want to remember. It is somewhat selective comprehension.

Spiritually speaking: drinking is not a sin. Drinking is a sin if you are convicted to not partake. Anything is a sin if it goes against your conscience. Sin is not universal in application; nevertheless, it is still an offense before God.

PS the drinking is not the problem. It is the excess of it that causes one loose their sobriety. We are called to be soberminded as Christians. We are to be able to keep our facitities operational and spiritually in tune with God.

I think you are the only person who is in fact turning people towards Christ by your posts, even though some of the "pious" might not agree with it ;)

My deepest respect for you.
Hahaha BTL!! The very religious may not agree with me, but, true Christians are NOT religious! Don't you know how many vitamins and minerals there are in a few beers? Hey! I'm no Liberal Christian, but even Paul told Timothy to take a little wine for his stomach!

It is a bit rich you calling the guy ignorant. You are preaching a "sin is the volintary transgression of the law" tack... which isn't taken seriously by any bible scoloars. It is either sin or it isn't. The Law is black and white. However, being an imperfect world, the application of the Law is grey.

You are absolutely right though, sin and salvation are actually unassociated. If you believe in Jesus, that he died for your sins, then they aren't counted against you.

Does this mean we can all happily become alcoholics?
A small amount of alcohol is probably fine. I would say becoming an alcoholic would serverly damage your relationship with God... not to mention anyone around you. And I guess the thing to remember is 1 in 9 people who take up drinking, become addicted. I was lucky in that sense, as I was a bit of a **** head in my early 20's... now I take it or leave it.

I do not get it!! You totally wreck the post by you interpretation. Drinking is not sin. It never was. It is the amount of drinking that is the issue. If you drink to get drunk, your motives were wrong. If you drink because you like the tast of whatever, then it is far different. Moderation is always the way of a Christian. You can eat too much and still sin. Do you think of that? Anything that you do outside of moderation can be a sin.

Sins are a violation of your consicence as well. That is why they are necessarily not universal. There is nothing in my post that is not true. I think that you should reread my post. I think that I was quite clear. Intentions count because God judges you by them too. It is not always just the act that is looked upon.

Question: What does law have to do with my post. Please point out the relationship. I am talking about Christ - not Mosaic law.

I posted this on another thread about drinking:

It has been said that an early Russian Czar, when faced with the decision as to whether choose Christianity, Islam or Buddhism for his people, rejected the latter two because both prohibited alcohol.

I thought it was interesting....
