Anyone can help with this question? im a bit confused about the topic of discipleship and was wondering if your not genuinely saved unless you are a disciple of Jesus Christ?

I feel like in the past I have tried to be a disciple but its only lead me down a path of misery as the harder I try the more sin I see in and of myself and then I find myself just throwing up my hands almost ready to give up at times.

When Jesus says that unless we forsake everything for him we cannot be his disciple! this is terrifying to me because how am i supposed to forsake everything!???

robert, how about a honest striving and desire to learn and understand and follow his teachings with belief in your heart that he is the Christ and rose on the third day?
does that make you a disciple?

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed, JOH 8:31

whats your opinion?

Discipleship is not a requirement for salvation. It is a requirement to be spiritually mature in Christ. You are saved when you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is the Savior and that He was born, died, and rose on the third day. As you grow in God, you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. I want to to make it known, it is not always in this order. I know people, who have spoken in tongues before they were actually saved, but the tongues pushed them into getting saved.

But no, discipleship is not a requirement for salvation.

You also say how are you to give up everything. Easy. Al of the fleshly desires that you have to deal with. If you are married with kids or if you work, I don't believe God wants you to give all of that up. But then again He may want you to, the point is, in order to be a true disciple, we cannot be bound by and to this world. We have to get rid of all fleshly desires and allow God's will to permeate in our lives.

Something God told me was stop trying so hard and just do it. At first I was stunned, but then I understood. We try so hard to be right that in actuality we are not right. We are trying so hard not to fail, instead of doing what's right. I hope that is not to hard to understand.

But again don't worry Rob, God will lead you and guide you into where you need to be. I'll be praying for you

Praise to God Almighty
God bless you.

Well, yes. The Greek word in the Bible for "disciple" is follower or learner. Someone who isn't willing to follow Christ, cannot, by definition, be saved. We are saved by grace due to Christ's death on the cross. We must surrender to Christ's Lordship to be saved.

I struggled with the same question you are for years. Do you know what? If you're even asking the question it speaks to the fact that you are a Christian. You are trying to obey God. We all mess up. Depend on the Holy Spirit to help you obey Him. You're going to fail. Don't take that as a sign that you aren't a disciple. Peter denied even knowing Christ... three times. All of the disciples abandoned Jesus when He was captured to be crucified. Only John returned. So we all fail, even the original 12 disciples!

Quit beating yourself up. Find a good church, a Godly friend, and invest time in prayer and Bible study. I'm happy to call you my brother. God bless!

Your post is full on contradictions. It's things like this why people doubt. "You must surrender fully, but we all fail." HUH?
