• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

it is genetic. My mom has depression, her mom had depression, her mom's mom had depression, my sister has depression and so on. But it is definitely genetic because other than what I mentioned there, I was asked if depression ran in my family when I went to the dermatologist to get on Accutane.

Some types of depression are genetic, but these can also be made worse-or better- by things that happen to people. Some physical illnesses and medications can also have depression as a result. Under a great deal of stress, people without depression in their family can become depressed too.

Yes and no.

Depression has clearly been shown to have a genetic predisposition. That is, people whose families have a history of depression are more likely to develop the disorder.

It does not mean that anyone with a family history of depression will develop depression, though. Something nearly always has to trigger the disorder, meaning the cause is partly environmental as well.

I think anybody who feels they got 'handed' depression from their ancestors would really like a book called Free at Last by Larry Huch! Jesus wants to set you free from depression! This book explains how a lot of these sorts of things get started, how they get 'passed down' and how to break free! :)

Just thought I'd pass it along...

I think they have pretty much answered your question. ^^^^^ ;)

But I would like to add. Just because people in your family may have it, doesnt neccessarily mean you will get it. Depression in usually triggered by something. Only your doctor can diagnose you with depression.
