Yes. Jonathan was a good guy and his body was burned, 1 Samuel 31:

1Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa. 2The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab and Malki-Shua.

11 When the people of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 all their valiant men marched through the night to Beth Shan. They took down the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth Shan and went to Jabesh, where they burned them.

Some Catholic people are against it, particularly the SSPX.

Right, but some Catholic people are against it, particularly the SSPX.

I see. With a quick perusal, it doesn't seem to give many salient reasons other than tradition. I would like to hear a reasoned defense. My intuition is they will fail to give proper weight to the power of God, but I could be wrong.

In the Old Testament cremation was a pagan practice and not one the Jewish people were to follow.

If you search out the words "give (gave) their bodies to fire" you will find the passages regarding this matter.

I'm simply stating what is very obvious in the Old testament for anyone who's actually read it.

I agree that in Jewish tradition people were either buried or laid to rest in underground tombs. Pagans are well known for cremation. Although I’m not aware of any commandments of God forbidding cremation or stating that the dead must be buried.

So? Not sure why it matters to you? No offense its not your word to tell His kids what He really said. So if Catholics are against it praise God

There’s no harm in asking questions to better understand certain doctrines or traditions.

Cremation was at times a sign of shame (Lev. 20:14, 21:9) or public judgment (Josh. 7:25).

King James Version study Bible. 1997 (electronic ed.) (1 Sa 31:11). Nashville: Thomas Nelson.

It was a Greek and Roman custom not a Hebrew custom. God’s people did not partake in cremation, unless it was an emergency. Either they were buried in shallow graves or a cave/tomb hewed out of a stone, as Jesus was.

Roman’s wanted cremation because they did not want the corrupted/decayed body to have to be united with the spirit during the resurrection of the dead.

Burning bodies was a form of idol worship.

Lev. 18:21 –

21 You shall not offer any of your offspring to be immolated to Molech, thus profaning the name of your God. I am the LORD.

Burning a body was associated with disgrace.

CREMATION, Josh. 7:25; 1 Sam. 31:12; 2 Kin. 23:20; Amos 2:1; 6:10.

God was angered by someone burning a king’s body and pass judgment on people because they did burned the king.

Amos 2:1-3

Thus says the LORD:

“For three transgressions of Moab, and for four,

I will not turn away its punishment,

Because he burned the bones of the king of Edom to lime.

2 But I will send a fire upon Moab,

And it shall devour the palaces of Kerioth;

Moab shall die with tumult,

With shouting and trumpet sound.

3 And I will cut off the judge from its midst,

And slay all its princes with him,”

Says the LORD.

The New King James Version. 1982 (Am 2:1–3). Nashville: Thomas Nelson.
