Marx wrote during a time of social upheaval in Europe, marked by the Industrial Revolution, the rise of capitalism, and widespread poverty. The working class faced harsh living conditions.

He said, "Religion is the opium of the people". By likening religion to opium, he suggested that it served as a form of escapism for the oppressed. Just as opium could dull pain and provide temporary relief from suffering, religion, in his view, offered comfort and solace to individuals facing hardship and exploitation.

The Chinese Communist Party officially allows the practice of religion but only under the control of the government.

Jesus would disagree that believing in him is like taking opium.

Karl Marx viewed capitalism as inherently exploitative, arguing that it created vast inequalities and systemic poverty. He advocated for the abolition of private property as a means to eliminate class distinctions and provide for the needs of all individuals. In a classless society, he envisioned that resources would be shared equitably. That's Marx's theory.

Jesus said in Mt 6

24 "You cannot serve both God and money".
Lk 6:

24 "Woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort".
Jesus said to a rich young man in Mt19

21 “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
He warned:

24 "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God".
Both Jesus and Marx warned against capitalism.

Is Communism compatible with the teachings of Jesus?

In some aspects, they are compatible; in some aspects, they are not.
