  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is Calvin an idol?

ghs... Do you also have a problem with the four gospels being named after mere men?

Well for one, I never had a problem with anyone, only asked a question and how some would respond to it.

Secondly, it's one thing to label someone something, it's another to say you are of Matthew only, or Mark, or Luke or John. First, they were inspired by God for the purpose of God's Word. Calvin was not used for the purpose of writing scripture. Second, I do agree with most of Calvin's stuff, as I said previously. Please don't take my question as an attack. It was not meant that way or even had that tone to it. ;)

Understood. I wasn't trying to be hostile, either. Just trying to understand the view against using a man's name for a label. Perhaps I misunderstood your intention.

I can see how it could be construed as idolatry to use a man's name to articulate a theological perspective, but it has been done with good intention by more than just the Calvinists. The Wesleyan denomination does the same thing and the Methodist church does it by default. The Lutheran denomination does the same. It helps me to know where someone stands theologically to use these labels.

Good discussion. Thanks.

Cool beans man.

The only people I have ever heard say that live very close to me. And, there is a Calvalry Baptist in my town.

The Problem with the Label of Christian, other than those who wish to deride we Calvinists for our name when Paul warns the same people of seperational pride by claiming "I am of Christ," is that everyone seems to want the label of Christian including Mormons and a endless sea of David Koresh type cults.

And, I don't see to many Mormons, Moonies, or the latest David Koresh type dying to claim the distinctive "Calvinist." And, since the label "Protestant" & "Evangelical" have been hijacked by people who are nothing of the sort, it seems we have fallen back on Calvinist.
