Bravo, Moriah!
I think my church (my particular congregation that is -- I can't speak for the entire denomination, especially since I haven't experienced any other churches in it) does an outstanding job of teaching basic morality, but not in a legalistic way. We aren't teaching rules to be obeyed, but how Christ lived and what he taught. We aren't teaching conformity, we're teaching the Gospel, learning to be Jesus' disciples. And it is a wholistic relationship with Father, Son and Holy Spirit we're after, and a loving community of believers, not mere rule-following. That's the way to do it!
