  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I believe in absolute truth.

But I don't believe in the existence of much knowledge in the strictest sense, except arguably in the field of pure mathematics, and even that is a bit hazy when you kick Euclid out of the frame.

There is absolute truth, but humans are relative creatures. We view life through a certain lens which was created by our up-bringing, education, social class, religion, nationality, ethnicity etc.

The Bible is considered by many Christians to be a source of absolute truth, maybe it is, maybe it isn't but it doesn't matter because the person reading it can't escape from their circumstances, they can't set aside all the pre-conceived ideas and read it 100% objectively.

Can we know that there's absolute truth? :O

Heh, I kinda knew that was coming.

I would say that we cannot know that there is absolute truth, because we cannot know for certain that our existence is real. So I guess when I say that there is absolute truth, that is based on the assumption that there is something in existence. Which doesn't actually make it absolute, but the fact that I am typing this should mean that there is something that exists in some manner.

I agree with a lot of posters who have said this.

At one time, people thought slavery was justified. Now, we cringe at it. At one time, Hitler convinced an entire country that killing Jews was good for the country, and now it is their blemish.

There is a Buddhist saying, "If someone says that he is seeking Truth, listen. If he says that he has found it, run far away."

I'm sure many of us have debated with those who have found the truth (small t.) These people will talk but not listen, will teach, but not be taught, and as a result, not learn. You can even point out the error in their logic, and rather than be proven wrong, attack you, claim it as truth, change the subject, or any number of logical fallacies to throw you off of the fact that they are clearly in the wrong. Such people don't want to learn. They want to win debate, and for me, it's a waste of time.

I don't think any person is capable of finding Absolute Truth, but is able to keep searching for it, and the wise man will welcome his error in thinking, and replace it with truth, will listen to others, test his truth, and see if it can stand up to scrutiny. A fool will cling to fear of being wrong, claim his map is the One truth, even claim it is God's Truth, while simply walking in circles, and wondering why he leads, and yet, no one follows.

Perhaps the only absolute truth is that there is no absolute truth, or that we cannot know it? ;)

I think truth is a complex concept. Although morality can and does differ from culture to culture, there are things we, at least the majority of us, can agree on. i.e., killing another human being for the sake of killing is wrong. That may be an 'absolute truth,' but again, there are those who disagree, so maybe not. It's weird to think about actually...it's like imagining the world without yourself in it, if you understand what I mean.
