  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Just an observation...
I've had some people tell me that the Christian music they have heard was so terrible that it actually spurs them off to the Lord. How does that work then?

I HATE - that's right HATE the vast majority of so-called "christian music" (so-called because I wonder how much of it can be called christian, and most of it shouldn't be called music.)

That includes most of what is currently being passed off as "praise and worship" music.

Listening to music from Matt Redman, Chris Tomlin, Hillsongs, etc. makes me sick to my stomach.

Frankly, most of it lacks lyrical quality. Oh, sure, it's loaded with Christian catch phrases, but is poorly crafted. And the "music".....

Ok - end of rant - carry on - and feel free to flame me, as I'll probably upset many of you.

Just my not-so-humble opinion.

but what do you do when you go to church in EVERY church you sing, if music is bad why would it be used in EVERY church all over the world

I once had a priest tell me that singing and hymns were like praying twice. Music certainly has a place and purpose.:liturgy:

i started a touchy subject. there is certian types of music that christians should listen to and some they shouldn't. most of the early enimon songs i had to turn off because they were full of so much swearing that i couldn't listen to it. but know...his lst couple of songs that they play over and over again on the radio aren't that bad. if you listen closely to his songs...they have a good message...but the way that he went around rapping in the songs was what put them over the top for me. if you were to look at some of the mainstream christian artists...relient k...toby mac...audio adreline...and others...how come whenever they come to town...their concerts always sell out. its because people found a way to worship god though types of music that interest them. i throw on a toby mac cd and just listen to it...and it reminds that God gave this man superior talent...and he is praising God for it. personally...the way that i spend my time with God...i would throw a cd into my cd player and go sit outside and just look at the wonder of what God gave me. The music puts me in the right state of mind to praise God. At my church's youth group we play cd's to help get us in the mood when we pray. But coming back to the topic i have been rambling on about in this post...the key really is how you personally feel about a type of music.

 Chris Tomlin is my favorite singer and my mom has almost all of the Hillsong CDs, I grew up with hillsongs, it's how my spirit grew my since I was 3 until about 10 when we started listening to the radio, but before that, we had a ton of Hillsong tapes, one Steven Curtis Chapman CD, and one Philips, Craig, and Dean tape, that's ALL I listened to for 7 years, and I didn't complain, I loved it. I don't mean to flame you in any way, but um, Chris Tomlin is my favorite singer, and I'm listening to his CD as I type. It'll be two weeks ago tomorrow that we went to the All Things New Tour, and he was there, and just the audience, they just worshipped God. Some of his songs aren't the best, but the good ones aren't good, they're EXCELLENT.

I think this is a wierd question.....but...here's my opinion. Music in general is not bad....it is the lyrical content that has the potential for being bad. I listen to Christian rap and Christian heavy metal. Some think that any rap and any heavy metal is bad...just because of the way it sounds....my opinion is God is using these people's talents in the way he wants them to....why is that bad? I guess I don't understand.

So, [forgive me for not quoting with a reference or exact terms] it says in the Bible that God will cause the rocks to cry out in praise to Him.
So, God can use geological rocks to praise Him, but the talents He gave to a person (Christian or not) will not glorify Him?

Frankly - there can be no such thing as a "wrong" style of music.

It's all personal preference. As I mentioned before - I can't stand most of what is considered "contemporary" music - but that doesn't mean it's "wrong"

That being said - there is such a thing as "wrong" music - music that degrades, rather than edifies - it's not the style, though, it's the content.

I've been to a deaf church...there was no singing. There were two people who signed songs but nobody sang them. There was no music. oh I guess that would go along with "spoken word" (somebody was interpreting so yes it was spoken!)

oh and I once was at a seminar by Bill Gaither and he was saying music with harmonies and drum beats was of the devil. It was amusing and ridiculous.

No, not all music is bad, just some. I don't think the Bible mentiones anyone who was saved by music, however it does say that faith comes by hearing the word of God, not by hearing music.
