Let me tell a true story, I hope not in a braging way. But to prove a point.

I have four children two girls and two boys. The girls are the oldest. My oldest girl has a Manters in Textile Engineering. My second girl has a doctrate in Pharmacy. My oldest boy has a degree in Fire Science. My youngest graduates this spring with a Bachlor Degree in Criminal Justice. I said that to say this I am not antieducation which I have been acused of.

I was told in another board that I was antieducational and that I couldn't know God's truth, because I was not educated. I only have a High School education, however I have been seriously studying the Bible for about 35yrs.

I was told also that one had to go outside the Bible to learn of God truths.

What say you?

Why Oh why, are you letting others drag you down?

Show me where it says in God's Word that you have to have an education or read other material to gain God's truth?

You obviously have plowed great love/time/parential devotion into your children.

You ever tell them the story of the Carpenter and a bunch of fishermen?

I can't know about Gods truth because I'm from Idaho.

Hmmmm...this reminds me of something...Oh yes! How many times have we been warned about pride of this sort? Lessee...

Ephesians 2:

4. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,
5. even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
6. and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
7. so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
8. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;
9. not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Acts of the Apostles 4:

5. On the next day, their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem;
6. and Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of high-priestly descent.
7. When they had placed them in the center, they began to inquire, "By what power, or in what name, have you done this?"
8. Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers and elders of the people,
9. if we are on trial today for a benefit done to a sick man, as to how this man has been made well,
10. let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead--by this name this man stands here before you in good health. 11. "He is the STONE WHICH WAS REJECTED by you, THE BUILDERS, but WHICH BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER stone.
12. "And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved."
13. Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus.
14. And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in reply.

1 Corinthians 1:

17. For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not in cleverness of speech, so that the cross of Christ would not be made void.
18. For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
19. For it is written, "I WILL DESTROY THE WISDOM OF THE WISE,
AND THE CLEVERNESS OF THE CLEVER I WILL SET ASIDE."
20. Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?
21. For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.

1 Corinthians 3:

16. Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
17. If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are.
18. Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you thinks that he is wise in this age, he must become foolish, so that he may become wise.
19. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God. For it is written, "He is THE ONE WHO CATCHES THE WISE IN THEIR CRAFTINESS";
20. and again, "THE LORD KNOWS THE REASONINGS of the wise, THAT THEY ARE USELESS."
21. So then let no one boast in men. For all things belong to you,
22. whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come; all things belong to you,
23. and you belong to Christ; and Christ belongs to God.

Perhaps a touch out of context in some...but the point is there. Take heart Brother.

I've met some pretty uneducated people with college degrees in my day.

The Holy Spirit is our Teacher. He may use many different methods in the process of teaching us (pastors, Sunday School teachers, college, books, etc.), but He alone is our Teacher and His textbook is the written Word of God.

BTW, I have a rather extensive formal education, so I'm not anti-education either. However, I count it all nothing for the "surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ" (Philippians 3:8).

I hear that from evolutionist quite often. Faith has nothing to do with our meager educational background. God put all His truth in the bible. Now it may not teach us to be a plumber or a doctor, so I'm certainly not knocking education, but there is no degree that can bring us closer to God.

I agree that formal education is not required to understand God's truth. God has used many throughout history who understood him with little to no education.

With that stated, formal education is very helpful in improving your understanding and articulation of God's truth both within the bible and outside of the bible. Sources outside of the bible also contain God's truth because He doesn't only reveal himself in the bible but also in

1) Living and dead people indwelled with the Holy Spirit
2) His creation

Formal education does help us have a better understanding of these aspects of God's revelation of truth. And outside sources also give us a better idea of the historical, cultural and linguistic context that the bible is written in.

So while education is not required, it is often helpful.

I agree, IMO to truly understand the authors intentions we have to try think like and place ourselves in the 1st century world of a Jew - when people choose to ignore the historical, cultural and linguistic context of the Scriptures a "gap" of understanding is created in which anyone can come along and place whatever understanding they like of that passage in that "gap" of understanding.

I've met some graduates of seminaries that were pretty sharp and I've met some who were not so sharp - mybe it's not a matter of formal education but what sources one studies.

I'll agree with gold dragon on this point. As one studying a M.Div. in seminary, it is very beneficial to help ask some questions and where to go find the answers, bu I don't believe that every believer is required to do so. I encourage you to keep studying.

What did Jesus say? "I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes."

Jesus recognized that you don't have to have an education to understand the gospel and do his will. Don't let people tell you that Jesus required his followers to be educated, because it just ain't true! :)

I tend to agree with those who say that formal educational training regarding the Bible doesn't really matter, but is helpful. I'm sure that in your 35 years you have gone to some seminars, listened under good preachers, had some great Sunday School and Small Group teachers. Kind of sounds like a great education to me and best of all, it didn't cost as much as a College/University education.

Also I'm sure the Holy Spirit has taught you a few things and will keep on teaching you. You have nothing to worry about.

I'm not anti-education either. Although most of what I know is self-taught and/or acquired as inexpensively as possible, so while I may not have a piece of paper saying so, I at least know I don't need one.

Hope this made some sense.

I'm not sure how not going to college makes you ANTI-education. I'm assuming since all of your children are college graduates, that you aren't AGAINST college. I'll further assume that the main (if not only) reason you yourself do not have a college degree is because some life event stood in the way (no money, married young, children, etc).

Remember: Christians today say there are many things you NEED to do, but they are usually wrong. I've had many people (non-believers or lost) who tell me they were told they HAD to do good works, or do this or not do that. I point out the thief on the cross next to Jesus to them. He had no time to do anything but believe. (Don't worry or flame me. I tell them that they SHOULD do these things, but it doesn't effect their salvation.)

Don't let the nay sayers get in your way. You've studied the bible for 30+ years. Probably longer than some have been alive. In Heaven, our Lord will not turn from you because you don't have formal education. Does anything besides that really matter? :amen:

Thands everyone for your post:

I know what the Holy Spirit has taught me. And no one can take that away. What bothers me most is some teaching that you haft to go outside of the Bible to learn God's truths. Which is absoutly not so. It is the reason most Churches have changed their doctrine to the tune of the modern liberals.

Well really there are two things that I have been consurned about for a long time. The other thing is some teaching the book of Genesis is a book of fables. And that most of Paul's writings are not authorative.

What these liberals have accomplished is the verry thing the devil accomplished in the garden. Which is "yea just what did God say" planting the seed of doubt. Which a whole lot of Christians not rooted and grounded in the word. Because all they know about it is what some preacher has told them. Are Believing this garbage that is being taught, which is a lie, but being taught as truth. The Holy Spirit doesn't call men to salvation to be bench warmers. One is called to learn and grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saverior Jesus Christ. Because of the dividing of the brother hood that is taught today, all most so called pastors won't is a house full of bench warmering tithers, not at the least worried about their souls just their checkbook.

Here is a list of what this dude says is required to learn what the Bible teaches.
  • Some education in ancient culture is necessary in order to understand what the Bible is saying.
  • Some education in Greek and Hebrew is also necessary in order to understand what a word really means, rather than impose a modern meaning on it which may or may not be accurate.
  • Some education in what the Holy Spirit has taught the churches during the past 2,000 years ABOUT the Bible is also very helpful.
  • Those who claim to only rely on the Bible are really relying on their own interpretation of the Bible, without obeying what the Bible itself says in regard to a multitude of counsel being a much safer route. That too is biblical ignorance.
  • Nowhere does the Bible call itself "God's Word." Anyone educated in the Bible would know that. The Bible refers to several passages as God's Word, or even the whole OT, but never says something like "everything from Genesis to Revelation is God's Word." It cannot, because the canon of Scripture was not finished when the last book was written. Even the statement at the end of Revelation (22:18) primarily refers to that book and not the whole canon, as some ignorantly preach. Any use of that Scripture as applying to the whole canon, is only secondary and based upon an event that took place hundreds of years after Revelation was written. Calling the Bible the Word of God is extrabiblical, outside the Bible, and the result of faith in the canon of Scripture, finalized around 300 AD. It relies on statements outside the Bible, not statements inside the Bible. I believe the Bible as canonized is the Word of God, as many church men of that period called it so, but that is not a statement found in the Bible.
  • So you see, you claim only to believe the Bible, but even in saying so, you use statements from church history, a source outside the Bible.
Hog wash! I have known men that couldn't read or write that had forgotten more Bible than this dude ever knew. That the problem they study everything but the Bible. If the Bible doesn't teach it we don't need it.
