I don't think the Lamb getting lost is part of the rhyme.

No it said "everywhere that Mary went"-the Lamb was sure to go. He didnt go home with them on purpose ,he wasnt lost. Mary should have realised that he belonged in his fathers house. But she didnt understand.
He continued in subjection to them and Mary treasured the moment.
Fine example of a humble son.

I cannot find "cockle shells" in the bible. Therefore this whole line of thinking is unbiblical and a tradition of men.
