Long story short, the specialist that was supposed to come in last night never showed up and there's a mystery note in the chart that he was told he wasn't needed. No one knows when that was charted, but the House doctor was pretty angry about it. Once he figured out he hadn't been seen, we had a different infectious disease specialist within the hour. Meanwhile, Adam spiked 103 a couple more times - they were starting to get worried about parts shutting down.

The specialist thinks he knows what it is, and is treating Adam for it even though he still needs some more tests to confirm it. He wasn't running a fever when I left an hour ago.

Praying for you and Adam. And the doctors. :crossrc:

I had an interesting class on Baptism today. Part two of the class is in two weeks. I'm taking classes through the Diocese, and it will last through May. It's interesting, because there are several places that the class is held, with only one instructor shared among the locations. The spots without the instructor are tied in through video, and they can still participate via microphone. It's pretty neat. I had stage-fright today, and was too shy to participate much, knowing that more people were watching than were in the classroom.

Ok, I'm home again. Adam's still in the hospital.

The labs are not back yet (had to send them out because they aren't common), but the specialist is convinced he has this, and an internist here filling in for his doctor told us this morning that he's seen at least one case very similar and that's what it was. They are calling it an atypical pneumonia.

Also, he is responding to treatment. His fever went down enough last night that we had our first actual conversation since last Sunday (he spiked again Saturday morning before this). Today, it hovered around 100 all day, which is fantastic compared to before, and he was back to his usual goofy self, sort of - like having to push all the buttons to see how everything works (the nurses love that). He also ate some. He's still very weak, and the doctor we talked to this morning says that he'll be in the hospital a couple days at least, and then at home at least 7-10 days after that before he'll be able to go to work.

Thanks for your prayers. I can see a light now.

A funny aside to this that you will appreciate, Susan. Every morning a priest or someone, has come in wanting to give him communion, which he has politely refused. We figured it's a Catholic hospital, they probably do this with everyone. Well, today when a lady came in offering communion, Adam asked her if there's a sign on the door saying he's going to die. She said no, your chart says you are Catholic, and we offer daily communion. So, we told her that we are Lutheran, and she apologized (which wasn't necessary) and asked if he wanted to say the "Our Father." He said he didn't know that prayer. I said, honey, that's the Lord's Prayer, and then we said it. When she left, I had to explain that daily communion is common when you are in the hospital, even if you are Lutheran (but it has to be given by a Lutheran of course), and the anointing of the sick can also be done even if you are not on death's doorstep.

A dear friend of mine works for a college as the Instructional Design Coordinator. She coordinates all the distance learning through video and/or satellite hookup, so the same class can be held at multiple campuses (or even multiple colleges) at the same time. I find the whole thing fascinating. Your class also sounds fascinating.

My prayers are with you as well.

Your story reminds me of my experience today visiting some of the members of my church in a local nursing home. Now that I am a part-time seminarian (on top of being a full time lawyer, husband, father, etc.) I wear a collar when I am visiting people on behalf of the church. Once in awhile, people call me "Father" but since many times my family is with me, they figure out I'm not Roman Catholic. Today at this nursing home, everyone was going out of their way to call me "Father" from the nurses to staff to the people who live there, so I was beginning to wonder. Finally, I walked past the bulletin board, and I saw on their schedule that it was about time for their weekly Catholic mass to start, so I think they thought I was there to fill in! I finally corrected one of the staff and tried to politely explain I am Lutheran and was simply there to visit a few people from my church.

    Oh no - that's funny!

Hubby is home and napping downstairs. He won't be back to work until next week. Praise God!

He's going back to work Monday - he was out 2 weeks with this thing. He's still coughing, but other than that, pretty much back to normal.

We also raised $22,000 at Kolin's benefit Saturday - the goal was $15,000. I didn't let Adam go, so he hung out at his folks' house while we worked the benefit. It was a good time.

I see I was away for too long. I had a little sinus infection myself, but not much of a fever. If I hit 101, I'd freak out. I don't run high fevers.
My kids are better behaved, but this year seems more stressful. Go figure.

Mark and I are getting ready to do some home renovations. We hired a guy to help out. We won't add on for another year or two. We want to fix up what we have first.

Did I tell you guys that Mikki is getting a divorce? I can't remember if I said that or not. We were told back in May. Ugh. Just under three years.

I gotta get some work done- talk to ya later!

I'm so glad to hear that Adam is doing better. That's got to be a load of stress off of you both! That's great about Kolin's benefit. All the money goes to help his parents manage medical bills?

    Kimmy! You've been missed.

Have fun with the home renovations. :D Painting, decorating, and rearranging are right up my alley... but renovations - you can have them. :D

You had mentioned Mikki's divorce before. Is she managing okay? Back home with you and Mark?

Money goes first to buy his communicator, and what's left over will go towards therapy costs.

Kimmy - have fun with those renovations! You had mentioned that about Mikki. I'm so sorry.

Guess who has Adam's pneumonia now. :( At least my doctor understood when we told him about Adam and gave me the heavy drugs now so hopefully I won't find myself in the hospital. Still just getting a taste of what he went through is yucky. I have moments, like now, where I feel ok, and then moments when I just want to lay in bed. I can't afford to miss any more work!!

Mary is really crawling now and getting into Christian's things.

Today while driving the bus one of my fans broke and fell, it was actually very funny when it happened, though frustrating.

Just saw this thread. . . I'm an Iowan by birth born in Waterloo and my mom was from Iowa, but I live and grew up in Indiana.

Still a hawk fan though. As difficult as it is this year.

    Welcome, Luther.

I was sick most of the week. Another fever, another antibiotic. This time it did break 101. Barely. I just had a fever and some aches and pains. Weird. I'm afraid to see how the kids will be when I get back.

Our dining room now has laminate flooring. The color is antique oak. It's wide oak planking. That crazy carpet is gone. The kitchen gets done on Monday, and as soon as the flooring comes in, the bathroom will get done. I'll wait 'til spring to do the counters and cabinets. Maybe I'll have a party- make all of you take a look at it.

We haven't talked to Mikki for about three weeks. They'll probably come by on beggar's night. If not, I'll call her to make sure things are still okay. I'm not sure when she was going to start school. She wants to be a nurse- midwife. (figures... my sister caught me online- IMing me now...)

I hope everyone is well- talk to you again sooner rather than later, I hope.

Wow! I'm not going to recognize the place any more! It must be really neat to see your house be transformed that way. I'm a geek - I'm happy when I get a new bedspread. I would be over the moon with a new kitchen, dining room, and bathroom. :D

I hope she's okay. Was the separaton somewhat civil for her? i.e. They're not at each other's throats?

Aw, Kimmy, I'm so excited for you with the home remodeling - you know how much I love that!

I have a followup appointment with my doctor tomorrow on the pneumonia. I'm on antibiotics until at least Sunday. Except for coughing, I feel ok. Both Adam and I still need an inhaler for the coughing.

We're supposed to leave for Aruba this Saturday. My sister is leaving on Wednesday. The wedding is on Monday. I'm excited and scared because I hate to fly. I know it will be a good time, I just have to get down there.

Wow, you guys are still sick??? :(

That's awesome about your vacation. I would love to go to Aruba. Hopefully your illnesses won't keep you and Adam from enjoying your time there.

It wasn't walking pneumonia - the real thing takes you out. I lucked out and only missed 2 days of work - thank God for weekends or it would have been more - I also went back to work a day or so before I probably should have. Poor Adam was out two full WEEKS.

We're both back at work and feeling better (went out to eat together for the first time since this all started yesterday), but the coughing is going to go on for at least a month. If this trip wasn't already paid for, we might have considered canceling it.

All I know is both my doctor and his doctor are saying that this atypical stuff is showing up more and more. What I learned from this is that if you find yourself with a deep unproductive cough, beg your doctor to skip the Z-pack and move on to the heavy stuff, like Levaquin. Also, the atypical stuff doesn't show up on a chest x-ray unless the doctor knows what to look for, so don't be surprised if the x-ray is clear, even if you have all the other symptoms.
