• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

According to the US Bishops Communications Office

Every year for the past 7 years, 160,000 American adults have entered the Catholic Church. About half are being baptized for the first time and half are Christians who are entering into full communion.

According to a recent study, in 1995, about 6.3% of American Catholics were converts. Out of a current US population of 65 million, that means that today, about 4.1 million US Catholics are converts. That makes converts to Catholicism the 9th largest denomination in America - larger than Episcopalians, Missouri Synod Lutherans or the Assemblies of God . The 160,000 adults who entered the Church last year alone would be the 50th largest denomination in America.

Thank you for the information!

I hear so many times from our Protestant brethern that the Catholic Church is losing so many people converting to Protestantism that it is good to see some real numbers that show the number of converts TO Catholicism ranks just that group within Catholicism, if looked at by itself, # 9 in this country if they were to be considered their own denomination . . amazing . .

My impression has been most definitely that the tide was moving the other way, that the Catholic Church in America was growing, and by a significant amount . . according to those numbers, in the last 7 years, 1,200,000 converts have come into the Church in America alaone . . 600,000 are Protestant converts . . I guess I am a statistic! :)

I wholeheartedly agree. It seems that I would have gone through all of the protestant denominations, but then I had no where else to go. It was as if God would give me no success as a protestant; it seemed God eventually said, Jerome, What are you doing..................don't you remember where you came from?

1 Corinthians 7:20-24
Each man must remain in that condition in which he was called.
Were you called while a slave? Do not worry about it; but if you are able also to become free, rather do that.
For he who was called in the Lord while a slave, is the Lord's freedman; likewise he who was called while free, is Christ's slave.
You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men.
Brethren, each one is to remain with God in that condition in which he was called.

I was Catholic when I was first called, but I ran away, because I thought it was the right thing to do. I am amazed at how little I knew. I thought that Catholicism was opposed to the Gospel. Took me twenty years to find out how wrong I was, but when there was no where else to go, God arranged my life to bring me home to my first love, the Catholic church. The words of 1Corinthians have special meaning to me.

One thing to keep in mind dear sister, is that unlike some of the great televagelists, etc., the Catholic Church doesn't have "crusades" al a Billy Graham. We don't count souls saved by the number that make an altar call and repeat the sinner's prayer. That is how our separated brethern count their numbers. The process of becoming a Catholic is a little longer, as you know!;)
Nonetheless, I always rejoice when a sinner repents, but rejoice all the more when they come home to the fullness of Christ's truth!
