  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Centrino is a mobile processor. Low power consumption and a cross between a P3 and a P4. It's fine for a notebook where extended battery life is more important than processor power. :)
Is this additional performance provided by the Centrino really worth its price ? A system equipped with Centrino could be around $200-300 more than a comparable system without it.

I can't really make an objective call on that for you based on the information I have so far. That really depends on your needs. Are you flying across the Atlantic on a regular basis and typing out legal docs on the way over, or polishing up that PowerPoint presentation? Are you taking it to each class in school all day and need the battery life? Are you playing Medal of Honor in Economics class? Are you making presentations all day while connected to a projector? LAN parties until you pass out?

It's so hard to say from where I sit, without more information on your usage. In this case it really is all about your needs and not about my theories, as much as I'd like to be more help. :)

It also runs cooler, anad is less likely to overheat in the confined space allotted to it in a notebook computer. The P3 had a significant problem in laptops with cooling - dunno about P4, but can't believe it is any better...

My experience is in an office setting, where the laptops are owned by salesmen who are admittedly a little careless... however, the p3 systems did seem to go in frequently for system board replacements due to overheating. The worst brand was Toshiba, but IMO it was a greater problem w/ all of the P3's compared to the P2 for instance - which rarely overheated.

Centrinos are based on the PPro (which are also P-II and P-III) core, clock for clock, it runs faster than the P4 or P4-M. It's a really good chip, and it also saves power and heat.

I'd recommend getting a slightly slower Centrino (1.4, 1.5-ish). It's equivalent to at least a P4 1.8 CPU.
