Hey everyone, I just thought I'd do something lighter today, so I though we'd discuss informal and made-up prayers. I often stick to formal prayers because they're more humble, and doesn't fall into heaping-up empty phrases as Lord warns of in St. Matthew 6:7. However I do have few of my own made-up prayers that I say, I think the best made-up prayers are the ones that come to you through prayer and meditation, as they obviously avoid the problems mentioned above. My most original prayer, is this one I came-up with for Saint Joseph, it reads as follows:

The Humble and Chaste Saint Joseph, pray for me!
Make me meek and humble of heart, like your son, Jesus.
Grant me the meekness, humility, and chastity of a real man.
So, what do you think? I can't stay and chat, I'm over-due for my prayer and reading break, but I was wondering if everyone can share with me, any of your own informal or made-up prayers, particularly prayers that have come to you through prayer and meditation?

Every formal prayer was made up once by somebody, so why not?

This one i wrote a few years ago. Not said it for a while:

Dear Lord Jesus, my blessed saviour
I humbly sacrifice myself to you
I humbly give up my life for you
I humbly give my body to you
To do thy will so that those who suffer
From physical tortures and ailments
Are able to live their lives without pain of suffering.

Dear Lord Jesus, my blessed saviour
I am willing to take on those pains
So that they may be healed
From the terrible afflictions that they live with.

Dear Lord Jesus, my blessed saviour
I offer myself to you so that all sinners who have died today
And those in purgatory can be forgiven of all their sins
And rest in peace in your merciful love.

I don't think we should be afraid of personal prayers. In fact, the Saints teach us to do mental prayer and it's very important, and much of mental prayer involves our own prayers.

I think Jesus loves it when we just speak to Him from the heart. We can say Church prayers or our own prayers from the heart, but I think it's good to just be able to tell Him anything in our own words too. It's trusting and like a child to do that :) I say both formal prayers and my own prayers.. I think we can just speak to Jesus as to a Friend! we don't need much ceremony to reach Him...

in the liturgy, it's different, it's a public act of worship. But in our own devotions, or how we receive the Sacraments too, sometimes reverence takes precedence and sometimes love. Both are important but being human, we tend to emphasize one or the other. Jesus spoke about that to St Gertrude.
