  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'd like to see Rooney's entrance interview with St. Peter when he gets to the Pearly Gates...

"So, let's see...when exactly did God tell you Mel Gibson was a 'wacko?' And I'm especially interested in this part where He made a...mistake, was the word you used?"

I am glad for your heavenly reward but unfortunately your endurance points haven't been up'ed by Mr. Rooney. Cynical or not, he has a point about both Mr. Robertson and Mr. Gibson (I trust neither of their motives)

If you don't like the mode of delivery, then why only pick on poor Andy. Pat and Mel both claim Godly intervention.

Because whether or not Mel or Pat did receive any intervention, they don't make a mockery of it. This at least signals an attempt at honesty (a commonplace at least if you will), something Mr. Rooney is obviously not interested in. You can argue he also has the same "inspiration" if you will, yet I can't help, due to his previous articles and broadcast note sarcasm as a weapon, note this as an attack on God.

I would give Mel the benefit of the doubt in my experience as someone who was interested in the world of film and saw the leaps of obstacles in my way relgiously and politically. He had and has much to gain financially but much to lose professionally.

Andy Rooney has no chance of losing his job for his article, and chooses to use that security to attack whatever he sees fit. I use whatever means I have, though they are small, to blast him back to his rocker.

If you can't see the difference between mocking and actual belief in God talking to someone, then there is no point in me explaining it further.

Feb. 22, 2004

A weekly commentary by CBS News Correspondent Andy Rooney.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It doesn't seem right, but religion has been in the news a lot recently.

Pat Robertson says that God has spoken to him and told him that George W. Bush will be re-elected because he deserves to be.

Here's Pat Robertson's exact quote: "I think George Bush is going to win in a walk. I'm hearing from the Lord that it's going to be a blowout."

The movie by Mel Gibson called “The Passion of the Christ” is the other religious issue in the news. Everyone's talking about that. The question is whether the Jews killed Jesus Christ - who was Jewish, of course.

I hadn't wanted to say anything about this, because it seemed like a personal matter, but Pat Robertson isn't the only one who has heard from God.

I heard from God just the other night. God always seems to call at night.

"Andrew," God said to me. He always calls me "Andrew." I like that.

"Andrew, you have the eyes and ears of a lot of people. I wish you'd tell your viewers that both Pat Robertson and Mel Gibson strike me as wackos. I believe that's one of your current words. They're crazy as bedbugs, another earthly expression. I created bedbugs. I'll tell you, they're no crazier than people,” said God.

"Let me just say that I think I'd remember if I'd ever talked to Pat Robertson, and I'd remember if I said Bush would get re-elected in a blowout."

“As far as Mel Gibson goes, I haven't seen his movie, 'The Passion of the Christ,' because it hasn't opened up here yet. But I did catch Gibson being interviewed by Diane Sawyer. I did something right when I came up with her, didn't I,” added God. “Anyway, as I was saying, Mel is a real nut case. What in the world was I thinking when I created him? Listen, we all make mistakes."

That is what God said to me. That's about all he did say to me because I'm sure God has a lot more important things to do than talk to someone on television.

My own question to Pat Robertson is this: The election looks as though it could be close, certainly not a blowout. If George W. Bush loses the election to a Democrat, will you become an atheist?

My question to Mel Gibson is: "How many million dollars does it look as if you're going to make off the crucifixion of Christ?"
PeterPaul: I'm Irish and I've never liked Mr. Rooney. He has always seemed to me to be something of an American brown noser to the Politically Elect.

"Niver mind...." --gilda radner

I've just never appreciated his way of making fun of Catholicism in order to poke fun at his own roots...irritating to say the least.
PJ O'Rourke is at least spiritually honest and funny...

If you want to mistake manipulation for edification and satire for mocking than you're just being hypersensitive.

Jeez DoF, Rooney has a point: the merchandizing bonanza has already begun. There are 5 or 6 web sites selling "The Passion of the Christ" stuff.

I'm expecting "The Passion" Fillet O Fish meals by next Friday.

I get irritated when Catholics complain about merchandising. We probably do more merchandising than any religion in the world. Who are we kidding? And if merchandising supports the film (and if you look at the website it isn't awhole lot) than good for the film.

Can I say prayer cards, rosaries, icons, Bibles with golden inlays, water from Fatima, Lourdes, crucifixes, little crucifixes, necklaces, rings blah blah blah?

You have a point, and I certainly don't have any problem with making money.

I do have a problem with Mel looking all weepy eyed and hurt and saying he just wants to make movie to show the brutality of Jesus' act of mercy and love to save us as a race.

Hey, Mel, ya did it for the money. Gore sells. America is a country full of people who don't read so one will ever know that the Gospels have been converting people for centuries without the graphic violence you depicit.

What's wrong with just admitting it ?

Really? You know his heart? I was a potential filmmaker and it makes me afraid to think I was planning on making religious films with people like you critiquing me. After all, you may think he "did it for the money" but you neither know this nor can you character assassinate based on a perception of Hollywood as a whole.

Hollywood is no place to "come out of the Christian closet". Not by a stretch. If you possibly knew anything about the industry other than what is on "Access Hollywood" or "ET" possibly you would know that the door is closed for prospects of religious films.

He did it for the money? And what if he didn't? Gore? Haven't seen it yet and I doubt he treated the film on the level of JASON X or Nightmare on Elm Street.

You have a right to your opinion. I grant that. However, I wish you knew Christians trying to get into the film industry and the frustration they meet everytime.

Rooney is to "journalism" what arsenic is to health-care. Gotta love the idolaters making God into their own image. Such a loving God Rooney worships... or is that Rooney himself he worships?

God spoke to me and told me not to get too worked up over a simpleton like him; nobody has paid attention to him in YEARS!!!
