  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

A weekly commentary by CBS News Correspondent Andy Rooney.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It doesn't seem right, but religion has been in the news a lot recently.

Pat Robertson says that God has spoken to him and told him that George W. Bush will be re-elected because he deserves to be.

Here's Pat Robertson's exact quote: "I think George Bush is going to win in a walk. I'm hearing from the Lord that it's going to be a blowout."

The movie by Mel Gibson called “The Passion of the Christ” is the other religious issue in the news. Everyone's talking about that. The question is whether the Jews killed Jesus Christ - who was Jewish, of course.

I hadn't wanted to say anything about this, because it seemed like a personal matter, but Pat Robertson isn't the only one who has heard from God.

I heard from God just the other night. God always seems to call at night.

"Andrew," God said to me. He always calls me "Andrew." I like that.

"Andrew, you have the eyes and ears of a lot of people. I wish you'd tell your viewers that both Pat Robertson and Mel Gibson strike me as wackos. I believe that's one of your current words. They're crazy as bedbugs, another earthly expression. I created bedbugs. I'll tell you, they're no crazier than people,” said God.

"Let me just say that I think I'd remember if I'd ever talked to Pat Robertson, and I'd remember if I said Bush would get re-elected in a blowout."

“As far as Mel Gibson goes, I haven't seen his movie, 'The Passion of the Christ,' because it hasn't opened up here yet. But I did catch Gibson being interviewed by Diane Sawyer. I did something right when I came up with her, didn't I,” added God. “Anyway, as I was saying, Mel is a real nut case. What in the world was I thinking when I created him? Listen, we all make mistakes."

That is what God said to me. That's about all he did say to me because I'm sure God has a lot more important things to do than talk to someone on television.

My own question to Pat Robertson is this: The election looks as though it could be close, certainly not a blowout. If George W. Bush loses the election to a Democrat, will you become an atheist?

My question to Mel Gibson is: "How many million dollars does it look as if you're going to make off the crucifixion of Christ?"

I am angry at the guy who is slandering God! It seems they all are, BUT the third, WOW he is off the chain! Right, God hasn't seen the movie yet!? God saw Mel Gibson before he was born! I am quite sure He has seen the movie! God calling people wackos? This guy, I believe, is committing blaspemy. All I can say is GOD HELP HIM!

The last time I listened to Andy Rooney was last year (or was it the year before or before that?). He wasted his air time and mine by publicly condemning the 10 Commandments--took them apart and dismissed them piece by piece. Nah, I don't need this arrogant celebrity. But I did pray for him at the time.

It is so fitting that we are crucified by the media in this time. We too are taking up our cross. When I told people in my office I was taking the day off (for Ash Wednesday primarily, but I work nights so I had to), they all said it was silly. I don't even let them get to me, I just smile arrogantly (I know I have to confess that as well).

I don't even remember the last time I watched 60 Minutes let alone Rooney. This show represents nothing of what I believe and is a waste of my time. So, I'm not surprised at his diatribe. He's off in left field like the rest of the mainstream media.

Well, I just got off the phone with God. [He's been busy lately what with all the wars and the movie about His Son, so it takes longer these days to get your calls returned].
"Mikey," He said [I hate being called Mikey, but somehow with God, it's ok]. "Mikey," he says, "what's got your goat about that Rooney guy on 60 Minutes?"
I explained that I didn't like him in the first place, and then he goes and bad-mouths a preacher and a movie about Jesus.
"Jesus? my Son? He bad-mouthed my Son?"
Well, no, I said, but he talked bad about the movie coming out - you know - the Passion movie.
[long pause]
"Hmm" God says, "I really don't know if I'm going to see that one - it brings up a lot of bad memories. He really suffered for you guys."
I know, I said, and most of us really appreciate it. But this Rooney guy seems to think that You told him Mel was a wacko for making the movie. I haven't seen it yet, God, but I hear it's going to change people's lives and maybe make us appreciate Your Son's sacrifice even more.
"Well" He says "I do talk to Andy once in a while, but I don't remember using the word 'wacko' about Mel, and y'know, Mikey, my memory's pretty darn good."
So shouldn't that wacko Rooney retract the misquote then? I mean he lied about what You said.
"Mikey, Mikey, Mikey, if I demanded a retraction every time I was misquoted, I wouldn't have time for anything else. That wouldn't be good would it? I mean there are homeless and helpless and hapless and they all need my help. So no - he doesn't need to take it back. Just remember Mikey, I put Andy there for a reason and I put Mel there for a reason, just like I put you there for a reason."
I know, God - but sometimes I have a hard time figuring out my reason. I mean sometimes it's clear and then sometimes it's like trying to find the dock in the fog.
"Well, Mikey, y'know Lent starts tomorrow. Maybe you could dedicate yourself to finding your purpose for the next 40 days. Hmmmmm? And don't let old Andy get under your skin too much. He is a crotchety old guy, but I mean come on - look at how old he is. We'll have our little face-to-face chat here pretty soon."
Thanks for you time, God.
"No problem Mikey - now be nice and shoot for the corners."
