  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Maybe the most you can hope for in the realm of belief is usefulness rather than Truth with a capital T. Practically I think it makes sense to continue holding a belief if it has proven itself useful to you in the past but to always be open to new evidence or results that might make a change of belief even more effective. That's about all you can do it would seem.

What new evidence but not misinterpretation of evidence now arises? How can theists overcome the argument from superfluity that God adds no overall explanation?
The Angeles infinite regress argument stresses that cause, event and time presuppose previous ones, such that an infinity of natural, efficient causes suffice.

Not only is faith a begged question it also is an argument from ignorance!
Aquinas' superfluity argument, which boomerangs on him, notes that indeed God is superfluous as any kind of explanation, which the ignostic-Ockham, the presumption of naturalism also declare.
Gracchus, yes that empty explanation God did it assumes a need over and beyond natural explanations but delivers an empty one.Keith Parsons well exposes that:" Occult power wielded by a transcendent being in an inscrutable manner for unfathomable purposes [I add that notorious greater good and that unknown defense arguments that Plantinga relies on.] does not seem to be any sort of a good answer." Why postulate a redundant mystery, despite Alister Earl McGrath, that is primary over real answers? This superfluity is not the scientific God of the gaps but instead the one of the explanatory gap!
Therefore, Gracchus rules on this matter rightly.
