  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Then why ask?

PP, I asked because I am constantly being told I misrepresent your faith. If that be the case it's probably a good idea for me to ask questions about it. Is there a forum that you feel is more suited for learning about the Catholic faith than OBOB? If so, please point it out.

Thanks

The Catholic and Protestant bibles differ.

Okay.

So citing scripture from a Catholic Bible holds little value for you.

I am aware that you have books in your Bible that I don't have in mind but is it your contention that in the 66 books I do recognize as authoritative there is not one, single mention of this practice? Must I recognize the authority of the book of Tobit to see Scriptural support for indulgences?

As has been stated, Catholics believe tradition to be a legitimate source of theology. You do not agree with that either.

Actually, we just cannot defend our practice regarding indulgences to your satisfaction. If we could, you would have had little to protest and nothing to reform.

Go in peace.

I see. Well, thanks for your charity.

Up until I was just told that indulgences weren't sold I thought they were. Weren't they sold in the 16th century?

So they don't sell them but they have the authority to?

God bless

This depends on what you mean by sold, Don. Almsgiving is not selling indulgences, although people can construe it to mean selling. Do you think that giving alms is bad?

According to the Handbook of Indulgences, there are 5 requirements to receive a plenary indulgence.

1) Sacremental Confession
2) Sacremental Communion
3) Prayer for the Pope's intention
4) The indulged act itself
5) Removal of ALL attachment to sin, both mortal and venial.

A plenary indulgence is a removal of all temporal punishment due to sin up to the time that the indulgence is granted. #5 is the hardest requirement to fulfill, and is the reason that not many plenary indulgences are granted. It is very difficlut to remove all attachment to sin, but nothing is impossible with God. Another thing, this is not what I say so, but what the church teaches:)

Peace be with you.

Are you talking about me? Have I been rude, incited debate, or masked debate by asking "honest, sincere" questions?

You really sound like you're calling my honesty into question because you feel I should know something that I don't. Just for the record, in all the time that I'VE been a member of this MB I have, to my knowledge, only participated in one thread on indulgences and that was early on in my membership.

However, as you don't outright say it's me you're talking about I should give you the benefit of the doubt and ask, "Are you referring to me in that post?"

So, is it?
Regarding the masked debate part? You bet.

We're not stupid Reformationlist. You're a 31 year old man who is fervent about your faith and you've asked a lot of questions about the Catholic faith. That's a good thing.

However, with your track record of starting debate by using carefully crafted words, do you sincerely think that I was born yesterday? Do you not know that I watch your posts and how you will take a thread about indulgences and by the time I get back here in about an hour, it'll be a good 4 pages thick and you'll go around and around and around?

I've seen it done COUNTLESS times...and yes, I sincerely wonder what your true intentions are...

I know you're not dumb. And if I were a bettin' man, I'd put my whole paycheck on the fact that you've already researched this question. And you know Shelb5 will bite...you know she will correct any misconceptions you have. But instead of letting an answer go, you keep re-wording your questions to keep people going around and around.

With that said, your question has been answered. We're not playing this game on my shift.

This thread is closed.
