What is the best way to deal with someone who is inconsistent with their words and actions who is your leader, like a boss or something? Like when they're saying one thing, then another, then getting upset when things are not happening as they want them to, even though their inconsistency and contradictions make it hard to follow their lead?

Difficult question without know more but you might make certain that you understand exactly what is expected by asking questions on anything that is unclear. You might also indicate any potential problems you see that could result from following the instructions you receive, sometimes leaders are more concerned with the objective and fail to anticipate some of the unexpected consequences

If your boss is erratic you might be able to help him by compensating a little (like Wooster and Jeeves).

You might ask additional questions to double check instructions or gain additional information.

One way is to ask them to give their instructions via a 'whats app' group for where you work, or by email, txt etc.
It would make it easier to then question contadictory instructions by quoting an earlier message with its send date.

Otherwise if you know this person well enough to take them on oneside and show them there contradictory instructins.
Your problem is that these are verbal instructions and without evidence they will deny that is what they said.

I would suggest a quite word about how concerned you are at these cross purpose instructions.
If they are not prepared to face them, it is either look for a new job or keep a record of each instruction and do as requested untill told otherwise.
Take the view that you do as you are told any consquence is your leaders responcibility.

Try repeating their orders or direction to them at the time to better hold them accountable for what they are saying. Making sure that they know there is no miscommunication about what is expected. If it doesn't make sense, help them see where it doesnt.
