  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

TBH, I don't remember. I read that so long ago, I can't remember what the EO teaches on that. My memory isn't always so good (especially short term ). I would have to look it up. What's the chapter and verse again?

I can't do scented candles. It bothers my sinuses. Lots of things bother my sinuses - strong perfumes, strong paint fumes, strong gas fumes, smoke, etc. But I'm able to tolerate incense well. Must be a blessing from God. :D

God bless you too, fire.

Thank you sister, if you could I would love to know what they say on this. Because the barazen serpent was (in fact) ordered by God to Moses to be made, and likewise when the people were told to behold it (only) they were in fact healed, Jesus also said, as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness so likewise must he be lifted up (this being a sign) pointing to Christ.

Whereas here it says...

2 Kings 18:4 He (Hezekiah) removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it:

However, more ironic if it be a sign which points to Christ (which we know in Christ it was) and if incense offered be a figure of prayer he likewise says...

When ye pray, say our Father which art in heaven...

John 16:26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:

And if you look up "right in own eyes" and "right in the eyes" of the Lord theres a patern to be found in respect to images as well.

Just as we can see one even in respects to what the hands of Moses made and the incense set before the figure which pointed forward to Christ.

Really interested in this so thank you Dorothea

God bless you

NKJV) Revelation 18:13 "and cinnamon and incense/qumiamata <2368>, fragrant oil and frankincense, wine and oil, fine flour and wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and bodies and souls of men.

Reve 19:3 And a second-time they have declared "allelouia and the smoke of Her is ascending into the Ages of the Ages".

^_^ ^_^ That would definitely take care of the strong smells. Then I'd just have to worry about sweating to death in that thing. ^_^

Nope.

I use my heart and mind to worship God, no tools or accessories required.

Plus, the last church I was in that used it (a Catholic church for a funeral) made me physically ill by smelling it. It smelled like rotting ash and it was very putrid smelling. Yuk.

Yeah, but that's what heaven smells like....minus the putrid smell and rotting ash...more along the Frankincense, Myrrh, and other lovely-smelling incense. :p I don't know what kind the RCC uses. :D

I know... let's not do worship as Christ taught the Apostles.

Let substitute a praise band! And doughnuts!

Forgive me...

Amen! so long as it is done in Spirit and in Truth!

What will we do in heaven? I mean with all the incense there?

Forgive me...

oh you mean the prayers of the saints .

Either way, literally or figuratively, our Lord saw fit to tell us about it in His Divinely inspired Word.

For those of us who worship in Liturgical Churches, we know by faith and the Word of God that the two Kingdoms, temporal and eternal come together. Think about it, we have the prayers of the Saints, we have the real presence of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Eucharist; why should we not use incense if we so choose?

For those who find incense to be a distraction and/or an impediment to worship, then it may be best to avoid it. Even though Scripture tells us about it, our Confessions condone and advocate it's use, the rubrics of our various Liturgies accommodate it; the influences of "pietism" and "legalisim" which crept into orthodox Lutheranism in past centuries are still being felt: Many of our members and Clergy see it's use as "Papist" in nature. Unfortunately (from my POV anyway;)), this is why it's used in only a few of our Parishes, in some of our Seminaries, and the odd special service here and there. Do we really need it?; no, but if it enriches our service, and edifies us; there is no reason why we should reject it. Our Lord worshiped His Father in the temple in Jerusalem, He taught there; there was a lot of incense there, yet He took no issue with it like he did the money changers; as I said above He did speak of in in Scripture; so those of us who claim to hold Sola Scriptura would find ourselves in direct conflict with Scripture. While we may choose not to use it, and not to attend a Church that does; we should not condemn those who do.

Incense is not something that we do for God, neither is worship or the Liturgy; they are all about what God has done, and continues to do for us poor miserable sinners.

That would mean all of us at one time or another, unfortunately. :sorry:

Indeed Dorothea! Without sinners and hypocrites; the Church would have no purpose!:)
