I was watching A Jihad For Love yesterday at the Toronto Film Festival. Some of the Muslim men were afraid for their lives, because the Quran teaches that if a man is homosexual, his head should be cut off, and thrown off a mountain. It's not unlike a few posters that I have encountered that want to bring back Leviticus Law and literally stone gay people to death.

One boy was whipped 100 lashes. He was in prison for 2 years, and then immediately for another 3 years. During that time, he was raped.

What kind of "good" religion would teach the death of others, or worse, what kind of "good" follower would want to kill an entire group of people if not fueled by the darkness of their own heart?

I have seen the same within Christianity. They were kissing the Quran, etc., and in Christianity, people often seem to worship the Bible far more than they worship the Author. Jesus spoke of endless forgiveness, and mercy, and kindness, and generosity.

So, maybe ending religion is the only thing that will save us, because all too often it is used to hide our darkness, and claim that it is the will of God, and assuage all guilt and responsibility. I can't tell you how many times I heard some snide verse tossed out of context, with the line, "God said it, I read it, I believe it." Even Satan can quote and distort the bible.

Legalize pot. After that, everything will just fall into place.

Good point.

I can definitely see the world being a much better place if world leaders got nice and baked before international meetings.

In the next twenty years what should humanity strive for?

Everyone setting aside their differences and living together in peace won't happen. Evolution made us tribal beings, and it will take a lot more than 20 years to evolve that out of us. But a couple of technological goals are at least feasible:

1) Developing alternative energy sources so that carbon-based fuels can be eventually phased out. Which will produce a side benefit of:

2) Reducing CO2 emissions. Even if fossil fuel combustion isn't the main cause of increasing global temperatures, it definitely makes the problem worse.

I don't think we should eliminate religion -- but we should try to be more tolerant of other's beliefs.
World peace is another thing we should be striving for.
Following the Golden Rule would be a good start. Treat others as you would want to be treated. Only then can we ever have hope for world peace.

In the next twenty years what should humanity strive for?

Work toward new technologies (non bioological and biological) with less impact on the planet (instead of banning and taxing - unless we put the tax money toward technological development - things) and to get rid of most of this political correctness.

Yes, and to try to work together to gain some peace and also to develop a fairer trade system.

Strive to get humanity into space on a more permenant basis (staying on Earth, nice as it is, is like putting all our eggs in one basket - it could help with population problems and therefore with poverty and also bring new technologies - even medical that could help people on Earth)....etc...

Saying all that - humanity is never going to be perfect and there are always going to be issues. We may have our ideals but we also have to be grounded in reality. :)

There is a little problem with that Golden Rule I've seen mentioned. Because what you want is colored by your religious/cultural beliefs and practices should you treat someone of a different background exactly how you want to be treated, or how they want to be treated? For example, what if you as a Christian would want someone to preach to you in order to save your soul. However, as a non-Christian I wouldn't want that and would be offended and annoyed by it. So should you treat me how you want to be treated, or how I want to be treated?

Meat grown in a lab from embryonic cow stem cells. I'm serious. You could get pluripotent stem cells from cows (or whatever other animal whose meat you like), clone them, and nurture the cells to become muscle cells (meat). That way, you'd get real meat without the horrible cruelty of factory farms.

I'm very happy about the next twenty years. Acceptance of GLBT is growing, as is acceptance of nonChristians in America. Racial tolerance and unity are winning as the older racists of previous generations die off. The Internet is connecting the world like never before. I'm so happy to live at this time.

In the next twenty years what should humanity strive for?

Moving forward, making a difference, reaching out, giving something back and working for change.

I like this one. There's so many people out there that fear change. Maybe if we just accepted the changes that come along in our lives, whether it's good or bad, we would be more at peace.

I like all the other ones that have been suggested, too. Another good one that hasn't been suggested might be better communication. If we all learned to just listen a little bit more instead of having this tendency to have to say the last word, or state your ideas first, we'd get through things a lot quicker. I guess this also goes with being more open-minded.

Its a good idea i think, however you know there will be a group of people who will claim its inethical and lobby against it. Then there will be meat purists on the other side ;)

I agree though, my dad came up with a similar idea. I do find some problems with the idea though (now i crave steak by the way, thanks :p ).

Im also still pro GM for plants and i think it's tragic that we wont use it much, i think we need to focus on plants that can stand droughts more, survive with less water, would be good for drought prone areas.

Im so glad to see someone who sees things in a more positive light :)

Though there are still many negatives and things can still backslide. (i tend to see things from both angles like, maybe discrimination is still there but hidden? ).

Making sure that everyone on the planet has clean water, enough nourishing food, safe and adequate shelter, and access to quality medical care.
More food wouldn't really be a solution though - this would also have to go hand in hand with social changes which reduce the incentive to have as many children as possible (as some sort of social insurance, to have someone who takes care of you when you're too old or sick to work).

Otherwise the result would be that instead of four near starving children per familiy in average there would be e.g. seven near starving children.

As long as the availability of food is the factor that limits the population size there will always be hunger in this world - and more food results in nothing but even more people being there who are close to starvation.

In the next twenty years what should humanity strive for?

A truce and greater understanding between Islam and the West would be an excellent goal.

Freer markets, smaller government, and strengthened individual rights would be another.
