I have real difficulty figuring out what this actually means....

"In the name of Jesus"

The name of Jesus is Jesus, right? And Jesus is a common name in many Spanish-speaking countries. Yeshua and Yoshua, Joshua, are at root the same name, I am told.

Is it the name of Jesus that is special, sort of magical, or is it actually the person Jesus Christ, Emmanuel?

And if it is the person, why don't we say "When I stand on the person of Jesus..."

When we pray "in Jesus name" I thought we actually are meant to be meaning "by Jesus authority" as if we have power of attorney to use his name, or we mean "on behalf of Jesus himself." Why do we seem to make this clear so seldom, to people who don't speak our religious language?

It is authority/power, like the power of attorney. When you give someone your power of attorney, you give them your authority to conduct business in your name.
