In Mt 24:15, why is there "let the reader understand" in parentheses?

It might of been added by the writer of that text, but not spoken by Jesus. Since scripture is divinely inspired, then it's still a valid addition to the statement.

The part in parentheses is not a direct quote from Jesus, but a parenthetical remark probably added by the author. Jesus would not have said that since he was speaking, not writing, his words. The author of Matthew, or a later editor, who knew his words would be read, added that caution.

it gets a bit complicated, but the translation refers to three scripture references by Daniel.
Daniel 9:27 which refers to the Roman army under Titus who destroyed Jerusalem in 70 A.D.
Daniel 11:31 to Antiochus who was thwarted by the Roman envoy and was forced to leave Egypt in 168 B.C. So he instead began his descrations and persecution of the faithful Jews.
As a result the regular Jewish sacrifices were abolished. A heathen altar was built on the Jewish altar of sacrifice.
Daniel 12:11 follows suit, stating the time frame of the period beginning at the time the daily sacrifice is taken away, until the time of the sacrilege is set up to be worshiped will be 1290 days.

but the interesting part is verse 12, which promises a blessing for those who wait and remain until the end of the 1,335 days.
A difference of 45 days.

to me that all means that we are not to loose sight of what is promised to us, no matter what we see happening in the world around us.

It seems like Matthew wrote "let the reader understand" to emphasize that it's something that the reader needs to pay especially close attention to and to give it a lot of prayerful thought.
Protestant churches began paying attention to Daniel and end times scriptures long ago.

Catholics used to pay more attention to it.
It's easy to see the CC in end times Scripture and in a not so positive way, as everyone knows. Maybe it's just uncomfortable for many Catholics because it's east to misinterpret?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church is spot-on with the topic of the end times.
