2 Peter 3:3-8 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

This verse just totally jumped out at me today. I was looking up something for Eschatology and the word creation in this verse just hit me like never before. I've heard this verse used to support the gap theory, but it is quite clear that this is meant to address those that scoff at the return of Jesus. While time matters little to our infinite God, He certainly is capable and aware of time. This God of the bible would not lie, and would not say that the world was created in 6 days, clearly defined as morning and evening, if it were not indeed so. These verses reinforce the literal account of the worldwide flood as well. While this verse addresses scoffers, who gets scoffed more than those who defend biblical creation? And most often by those who claim to be on our side at that.

When I first started debating apologists for evolution the word that came to mind so often was 'scoffers'. They scoffed at Noah even though they were preached to for 150 years. This passage calls the Christian disciple to be patient and that is a lot harder then it sounds. The most important area of scientific research is far and away biology and this is dominated by evolutionary thought. We should not be suprised by this, we have been warned repeatedly in Scripture.

Indeed, it is hard to take when professing Christians are chiming in when we try to defend Biblical creationism. I can't say I have an answer for this or can tell you how to deal with Christians who have been taken in by this. What I can tell you is what I have found to be true and totally reliable, the Word of God can convict anyone if you don't lose you're patience or you're confidence.

On a personal note I think the harshness of these attacks are meant to scare Christians away from natural science. I would not mind so much if it were not so effective. This is the most important area of discussion in Christian apologetics and we do well to learn as much as possible about how evolution has taken control of our most important areas of learning.
