High mountains are well known by people of many countries to be places of great intensity for inspiration, even for
communion with the Creator. Where did Moses attain his flaming bush and tablets of holy commandments?
"I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills,
from whence cometh my help.
My help cometh from the Lord
which made heaven and earth."
~Psalm 121
"I live not in myself, but I become portion of that around me;
and to me high mountains are a feeling.
Then stirs the feeling infinite, so felt in solitude, when we are least alone;
a Truth, which through our being then doth melt and purifies from self;
it is a tone, the soul and source of music."
"Be alone, and feel the trees silently growing.
Be alone and moonlight white and busy and silent.
Be quite alone, and feel the living cosmos softly rocking."
~D.H. Lawrence
"I know that I am one with beauty,
and that my comrades are one.
Let our souls be mountains,
let our spirits be stars,
let our hearts be worlds."
The American Indian always knew to look to the mountains, even
if just lifting their eyes to them for inspiration and courage; this is why the eagles are revered as symbols of the
mind and heart aloft. Why the ardor of the mountain climbers,
who risk high danger to climb the peaks and even those who climb frozen waterfalls?
And my own favorite:
"To me, the converging objects of the universe perpetually flow,
All are written to me, and I must get what the writing means"
~ Walt Whitman
Deepest feeling always shows itself in silence.
"By all means use some time alone....see what thy soul doth wear."
~ George Herbert
