  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Harvard has a project called Project Implicit.

Follow the links from the "Demonstration" option and you'll reach the rest of the tests.

The test takes two subjects - say African American and European American and "good" and "bad" words (positive / negative, really) and has you sort the pictures. The words are paired (African American + good word / European American + bad words and vice versa), and it tests how easily you make the connection between the two. The program measures the time you take to make the connection, too, so you can't just cheat and go slow and get every single one right.

It's interesting to think of one's biases as occuring on an unconscious level. I apparently have a "Slight automatic preference for White people compared to Black people," and a "Slight automatic preference for Gay people compared to Straight people." I also prefer Arab Muslims over "other people" (and I don't know any Arab Muslims, so I'm completely lost by that).

What results do you get? Were you surprised by any of them? What do you think of the ability to figure one's implicit biases? Please be honest, by the way.
