  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Definition:

1. She was born without original sin only. Possibly sinned during life time.

2. She was born without origina sin only. No sin during life time.

This is just a thing for clarification because I'm mildly confused.

Papal documents and the like for reference would be appreciated!

Thanks!

The Blessed Virgin Mary was preserved exempt from all stain of original sin by a singular privilege and grace granted by God , in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the human race.

The Immaculate Conception

490 To become the mother of the Savior, Mary "was enriched by God with gifts appropriate to such a role." The angel Gabriel at the moment of hte annunciation salutes her as "full of grace." In fact, in order for Mary to be able to give the free assent of her faith to the announcement of her vocation, it was necessary that she be wholly borne by God's grace.

491 Through the centuries the Church has become ever more aware that Mary, "full of grace" through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception. That is what the dogma of the Immaculate Conception confesses, as Pope Pius IX proclaimed in 1854:

"The Most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin.

493 ...By the grace of God, Mary remained free of every personal sin her whole life long.

But shouldn't you have known about the definition of the Immaculate Conception before you converted.

Excuse me?

Please do not assume that I didn't know what it was. I was merely asking for clarification. I was fairly sure that the definition was "free of all sin during her whole life."

I haven't "officially" converted. I have not gone through RCIA. I know plenty about Catholicism though.

Please do not post something like that again. Perhaps it's because emotions don't really get conveyed through the internet... But it [your post] was minorly insulting.

I was surprised to hear you even question the fact that She sinned that's all. And when asked if you converted you said months ago so yes, it did make me wonder how a knew convert wouldn't remember this. But you just clarified your answer by saying you havent officially converted and have not gone through RCIA so it makes more sense now.

Am told the language used by the angel in the blessing indicates a past tense, as in she was already full of grace. If someone is "full" of something there is not room for anything else. In this case being "full of Grace" would mean she could not sin. The question then becomes when did this 14(or so) year old girl get "full of Grace". BTW this condition was a gift from God.

Tradition and reason has it that her condition, being full of grace would have extended to her conception. Very briefly here is why. We hold that Jesus is both 100% man and 100% Divine. We also hold that the fall of Adam passes a "fallen" nature to all of us. We inherit this from conception (called Original Sin) from our parents. Since Jesus gets his human nature completely from Mary and He was without sin, then Mary could not have had this stain of Original Sin or any sin when Jesus was conceived. So Mary's state of Grace must have been from her conception. So, because of God’s Grace Mary was conceived by her parents without them passing the stain of Original Sin to her. That in a nutshell is the Immaculate Conception.

To go a bit further, she was living without sin in this state when the angel spoke to her. She is allowed to choose, she says yes and that makes possible for Jesus to be born fully man without that stain of sin.

Have been given this grace and then entrusted with raising God Incarnate one would wonder why this grace would subsequently be removed by God from Mary. Tradition passed down from the Apostles is that she remained sinless and we believe before death she fell asleep and was carried into Heaven by her Son.
