  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The ashes are a sign of our sinfulness and our sorrow for our sins. The Bible speaks of sackcloth and ashes as a sign of penance.

Not eating meat is also penance for our sins. Jesus calls us to give things up for Him, and giving up meat on Fridays is one small way we do that.

Hi, Jeff. :) You're not stupid at all. And you're certainly not alone. ;) As Paul said the ashes are a symbol of sorrow and repentence for our sins. It is our acknowledgement that we are sinful creatures and nothing (dust to dust) without God's Grace. Marking ourselves this way is a sign of penitence and humility.

The Friday penance is a sacrifice that we make in response to the greater Sacrifice of Christ. We suffer so that we may become closer to Him. Our little pain really brings home the enormity of Christ's suffering. Fasting and abstinence are also means by which we learn self-discipline and self-control. If we cannot control ourselves, how can we be an example to others? :)

Peace be with you!

Sandy
