• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Long story short, I like how the general Jesus portrayal is, so I had long hair.

Anyway I was reading my bible and i came across this.

I Corinthians 11:14
"Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?"

I was so concerned I cut my hair with a razorblade as soon as I read this. Will God understand that I didn't know. Please help pray for my forgiveness.

I wouldn't worry about this. Some things in the Bible, particularly the old testement, need to be taken into context. Long hair may have been taboo for health reasons or something else in Israel society, just like circumcision. One thing to keep in mind is that the old testament served as a society rule book (laws if you will) as well as a religios document.

Here's an article I found on the web:) Did Jesus Have Long Hair?

Most people assume that Jesus had long hair. After all, that's the way they've always seen Him portrayed in every painting, drawing or movie. That's the only Jesus they've ever seen. But are those depictions accurate?
The fact is, we don't know what Jesus looked like, because the first depictions of Him weren't done until hundreds of years later. Thus every image we've ever seen of Him is based on nothing but the artists' imaginations.
While we don't know what Jesus looked like, we do know that He didn't look like the common depictions of Him with long hair. After all, this same Jesus inspired the apostle Paul to write in 1 Corinthians 11:14: "Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him?"
In addition to this instruction regarding long hair on men, the Bible also contains circumstantial evidence that Jesus didn't have long hair.
Perhaps the most telling is that when Judas betrayed Jesus, he had to identify Jesus by a kiss. That was the prearranged signal Judas had given so that the guards could identify Jesus. Why did Judas have to do that? Because Jesus looked just like any average man of His day, and they wouldn't have been able to identify Him if Judas hadn't betrayed Him with a kiss.
This incident shows us that Jesus looked like any ordinary, average Jew of His day; there was nothing distinguishing about Him. The messianic prophecy of Isaiah 53:2 (NIV) says of Him: "He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him."
The Gospels tell us that on at least two occasions Jesus slipped away into the crowds when people were trying to kill Him (Luke 4:30; John 8:59). He was able to escape harm because He was simply an average-looking man of His day and blended in with the other people around Him.
A Feb. 24, 2004, Associated Press article reports: "'Jesus didn't have long hair,' said physical anthropologist Joe Zias, who has studied hundreds of skeletons found in archaeological digs in Jerusalem. 'Jewish men back in antiquity did not have long hair.' 'The Jewish texts ridiculed long hair as something Roman or Greek,' said New York University's Lawrence Schiffman" ("Jesus Scholars Find Fault in Gibson's 'Passion'"). However, it wasn't at all typical among even the Greeks and Romans, as plenty of statues and coins from the time attest.
"Along with extensive writings from the period, experts also point to a frieze on Rome's Arch of Titus, erected after Jerusalem was captured in AD 70 to celebrate the victory, which shows Jewish men with short hair taken into captivity" (ibid.).
Jesus wasn't the tender, effeminate man with a somewhat angelic appearance as commonly depicted in paintings. He was a carpenter, a builder, a man who knew the construction trade. He knew how to cut down trees and make wooden beams, to haul rocks to build walls, to construct buildings from stone and timber.
The Gospels make it clear that He spent a lot of time outdoors. He hung out with fishermen, the kind of characters who would never respect and look up to a weakling. Yet Jesus had 12 disciples who followed Him everywhere He went and who in time died for Him. They knew Him as a real man, not the fabrication we see in so many paintings.

Oh, I just remebered Samson his power was in his hair.I always thought he had long hair, but I could be wrong. The lord knows you did not mean anything by that. He's not worried about the hair on your head .Just your spirit.I could never see God at the pearly gates turning someone done for having long hair, because its not your physical attributes the lord is intrested in .

Dear Mind over Matter,

There is no sin in having long hair. But what I find most amazing is your beautiful faith and your desire to do what is right. I praise God for you. God bless. Tapero

Dear Mind over Matter,

I just noticed your title; I am really concerned about my afterlife. I was wondering why you were concerned. Are you concerned about going to heaven? Or were you thinking about rewards? I just want to assure you that as a Christian once you are saved you are always saved. You can not lose your salvation. I hope it's okay I asked these questions. Tapero

Paulus is the least favorite , he is the one who persecuted Jesus , i advice you not to listen to him, but only to Jesus himself.

He is the one who has made a LOT of people confused about Christianity, our faith, and would deem that God cares about materialistical things, what we wear, what we look like, anyway so what's the real deal? How can we know for sure what God wants from us?

By listening to Jesus who is the son of God, and be fully aware that at the time Jesus disciples only knew 'shards' and where partitially badly informed of the complete truth, Paulus who never met Jesus besides in a vision is the perfect example of that ,and afterwards did teach us all of that rubbish, including the letters towards those cities, which weren't even adressed to us but are still wrongfully taken over as Gods doctrine as such.

If you knew the truth you would laugh at yourself for cutting of your hair. Fear of God is useless for you are a part of God, being afraid of God is like being afraid of your own body.

Here's a comforting Near death Experience of Bettie Eadie, who saw the light and who was brought up with a strict Christian doctrine's , she was astounded to see how much difference there was between the spitefull God of doom sitting on a throne with a beard judging you and then sending you to hell , compared to the overwelming in undescribable form of light, love that she met who was more like your best of best friends, and knew you more then even your own mother knows you.

http://www.gotquestions.org/hair-length.html

Question: "What does the Bible say about hair length? Should men have long hair and women have short hair?"

Answer: The 1 Corinthians 11:14-15 passage is found in the context of a paragraph that focuses on the distinctions between men and women and how that was to be observed in Christ’s church. In contrast to the natural head covering God gave to women in their long hair, Paul makes the statement that while long hair is a woman’s “glory” it is a man’s “shame.” And he states that even nature teaches us that it is a shame for a man to have long hair.

Thus, while there is no specific guideline as to how often one should cut his hair or at what specific length to cut it, it is clear that God intended for there to be a distinction between men’s hair and women’s hair length and that the idea of “unisex” hair cuts are contrary to this distinction. What the Bible is saying is that women should generally have long hair, and men should generally have short hair. A woman should not have a man’s haircut, a man should not have a woman’s haircut. We should be able to tell if a person is a man or a woman by their hair.

you say you had long because you liked the general portrayal of Jesus - not because Jesus came and spoke to you and told you to grow your hair long.

What I am saying is that the Lord Jesus (as far as I can understand) will not judge you because of your hair. And even if having your hair short or long was sinful, Jesus ALWAYS forgives us. :) So take comfort in that FACT.

pour your heart out to Jesus. I think to Him, the most important things we do with our lives is not whether we have our hair long or short, but that we love Him with all
our heart soul mind and strength and that he is a daily part of our lives and we are seeking to guide others towards the joy we've found in Jesus.

take care <><

In that culture, ancient Greece, the male prositutes wore long hair. That is how they were identified as such, so they could stand out to their customers. You obviously would not want to put that image on a member of God's church. It would cast a pall over the whole church.

I don't think it is necessarily a universal law for all people and all times like "Love your God with all your might." and "Love your neighbor as yourself." I could be wrong. I have had long hair and done good deeds and had short or no hair and committed horrible sins. I don't think it is crucial. Jesus did not say, so I must think it is not a central part of our faith. As far as what Jesus looked like during His earthly ministry, who knows. What He looks like now to others is based on what we do, that is much more crucial.
