  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well, I'm pretty sure I am male. But I want to make sure you agree with my description of who I am (on this level), so tell me what I need to check to make sure I am male.

Do I need to play the role of a male in society (more aggressive, ect.)? Well, I think almost all of us can agree that is just a stereotype, and even if it is true on average, it does not have to be true for me to be a male.

Maybe a genetics test? Do I need the XY? XXY works, or no?

A pants test (aka, I look in my pants, no need to go into more description than that)? Well, so far I am lucky and haven't had any accidents, but you never know when a nasty car crash could remove any male bits I have, so that might not be the best standard.

Well, I could go on listing different test, but I want to know the test YOU want me to take to make sure I am a male.

Well, from the dictionary definitions it appears you have three choices under which you may qualify.
1. a person bearing an X and Y chromosome pair in the cell nuclei and normally having a penis, scrotum, and testicles, and developing hair on the face at adolescence; a boy or man.

2. an organism of the sex or sexual phase that normally produces a sperm cell or male gamete.

3. a staminate plant.

Take your pick and we'll go from there.

I think which test you want to take depends mainly on two questions:
1. In which context did this question arise?
2. For which purpose do you want an answer?

Humm...i find this quite interesting actually.

First i think we have to remember nothing is black and white and the term male was coined by us humans. For me there is a difference between Gender and Sex.
Our sex is our anatomy.....ie what reproductive organs we have. Gender on the other hand is a social construct. We are all socialised to behave in certain ways based on our sex. From the moment your born you are either put into a blue or pink blanket depending on your sex and it just goes on from there. Like my sister getting a doll on her 6th birthday and me getting a fire truck on mine. If we don't behave like society expects then we are viewed as abnormal. Which is tough on my 10 year old self who prefered to play with his sisters dolls.

The idea of men and woman was created by humans and its ideals are only valid if soceity gives those ideals value. Even if (in my opinion) they really hold no purpose. But male and female on the other hand....thats just anatomy, hormones, etc. Some people are male, some are female, some are both, some were born one sex but through the use of modern science have transitioned as far as possible to the oppisite sex. Oh and if you are unlucky to lose part of your male bits you will still have some of the other male features so i guess you are still male. Whether you are still a man or not...well you'll have to ask society on that one.

Oh ps. I answerd one to four as "no" and yes on five so i guess i failed the test. Meh.....

I don't agree. Some gender stereotypes are based on nature. Women crying at things that men normally wouldn't cry at, is based on hormones. Boys being attracted to destructive or competitive activity, is also based on hormones (testosterone).

Most of how we view gender, is a more of a result of nature, rather than nurture.

Oh ps. I answerd one to four as "no" and yes on five so i guess i failed the test. Meh.....
Better luck next time. What about the bonus question?

You are a man if you identify yourself as a man. Apparently you do, so you're a man.

Physically, although there are two common discrete genders, there is somewhat of a spectrum when it comes to genetics and other gray areas. The societal understanding of gender is based in part on the biological aspects of both genders

Three of my answers qualified me as a man, and two as not a man, so apparently I am a man according to your test, or at least on the man-side.

The test can take some time...

1. Have 360, want PS3, but can't afford.
2. Neither, I prefer the cooking channel. (Ouch, my score just took a hit. -_-)
3. Instant reaction, yes (but I could just be a female lesbian in a mostly male body), but then there are three issues. One, she is likely taken. Two, even if she was free, there is no way in the world I would have a chance. Three, even if I did have a chance, I haven't any clue who she is, and I am being superficial.
4. The recent movies? Yes. The old comics? No.
5. First two no, but sometimes the third.
Bonus: Truck, on the off chance it is one of those big RC ones (I don't want a real monster truck, no way I could pay for the gas).

I have a feeling I didn't do so hot...

Yes, you have to play a role within society to be a male. The role is pretty natural and the expectations are rather minimal.

What do you think a male is?

Why is it confusing?

It seems like a pretty natural course to take, and those who do not find it a natural course are not healthy.

It's actually not such an easy answer - though it most cases people will say that it is easy to answer. To be a male you generally have to possess the Y sex chromosome. However, to complicate matters, there are individuals with an XY genotype that exhibit a female phenotype and grow up believing and feeling themselves as female, not male. Then of course the problem of gender (as opposed to sex) is that it is partly socially constructed and therefore the product of cultural convention or 'norms'. There are even cases of males who grow up as girls and then, during adolescence, experience a surge of testosterone and become males. Sex and gender determination is a weird, complex and even bizarre field of inquiry, so it's never going to be as clear-cut as people say that it is. The lines between male and female are not always so clear, especially in the cases mentioned above.

I read an article recently about a female sprinter whose sex is being called into question. She must be entirely female to compete, and it's being questioned whether she is truly a female.

Sprinter's sex called into question- Yahoo!7 Sport

Apparently it's a rather complicated matter, as they are going to do genetic tests, physical examinations, and bring in experts in sex and gender. So it's probably more than just a man disguised as a woman.

There are all sorts of genetic and biological things that can cause someone to have a questionable sex. A female has XX chromosomes, and a male has XY chromosomes, though it's also possible to have XXY and XXYY chromosomes. Then there are hermaphrodites, where they have both male and female genitals, or at least partial ones. Then there are people who may have been born completely one gender, but due to some anomaly or defect their sex appeared to be the opposite or ambiguous, and they were raised differently from what their chromosomes make them. Then of course there are transgendered people, that although may have been born and raised as the gender that matches their genes, they develop tendencies and a personality, and most importantly an identity as the other gender or no gender. There are probably more scenarios I am unaware of.

So I think it makes the most sense for each person to choose what they identify with, and for society to accept that. People like discrete and well-understood options, but it usually turns out that life really isn't that simple.

The only time this will come into question is in certain things like sporting events, where the gender you are can make a huge biological difference.

If you have a penis then you're a guy. Thats basically it. I don't like any sort of generalization about anything, or roles, or stereotypes of any sort. Everyone's different, and that is something to celebrate. Even though I think its kind of weird to run around in women's clothing, hey if it floats your boat go for it.

Best answer so far.
