Susan,
Christians cannot be possessed by demons, period. We are indwelt by the Holy Spirit so that is impossible. We however can be oppressed, but God is greater and is able and faithful to see us through.
Turn off TBN and keep your eyes on Jesus.

Most of what you have read or heard about demons is true. I have dealt with them myself, I also have several friends who can see them. (If they are together, then yes they do see the same thing.) But one thing that I've learned that is more important than all of the information on demons and their activities.

1. In order to bother you the way you fear, they must have legal ground.
When you walk past a display of alcohol, if their is no desires in you for it, then a demon has no ability to disturb you. If he does say something to you it will sound like nonsence and you will just dismiss the thought and the demon.

2. If a demon were to harrass you, then remember you are the one in control, you have the authority. Just tell the demon to leave. If he won't then simply ask God what legal ground in your heart (what sin) allows the demon to stay. then repent of that sin and the demon has to leave.

A demon only has a right to bother you if you give him permission.

And you can only do that by either 'not rebuking him' or 'allowing sin in your life'. Because you are a christian no demon can control you. They are really just like insects. You shoo them away or you swat them. It is you and only you that allows demons to bother you and it has nothing to do with what you hear or where you walk, only what you allow to stay.

Sometimes, just reading the scriptures out loud will help. Lord bless you:

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Abide in Christ and no harm can come to you without going through the Father's hands. Earlier, 1 John 4:4 was mention. Believe it, and hold tight to the faith He has given you. He is well able to keep that which is committed unto Him until that day.

1 John 4:4 ¶ Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform [it] until the day of Jesus Christ:

Philippians 2:13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

2 Timothy 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

Hebrews 12:2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Demon Possesion is no longer here. Take a look at this.

ZECHARIAH 13:1-6
"In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.
"And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord of hosts, that I will cut off the names of the idols out of the land, and they shall no more be remembered: and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land. And it shall come to pass, that when any shall yet prophesy, then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him, Thou shalt not live; for thou speakest lies in the name of the Lord: and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the prophets shall be ashamed every once of his vision, when he hath prophesied; neither shall they wear a rough garment to deceive: But he shall say, I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth. And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hand? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends." (Zech. 13:1-6)
The subject of demon possession is a difficult one. I do not pretend to know a great deal about it. I do know that the Bible teaches that there were people possessed of demons and that Christ and the apostles cast out demons. Any attempt to weaken this by saying that the recorded accounts were the result of Christ's accepting a superstition which existed during the first century must be totally rejected by those who accept his diety.
Zechariah 13 points to Christ as a fountain, an atonement for sin. Verse 2 is a prophecy of the end of demon possession. Since it took a miraculous operation of the Spirit to cast out demons, the cessation of the miraculous would have left no means for dealing with demons if they continued beyond the period of miracles. The atonement of Christ limited the work of Satan (Matt. 12:22-30). The casting out of demons demonstrated the power of Christ over Satan. The apostles' casting out of demons demonstrated their apostolic power, proved the gospel they preached, and confirmed the claim, of Christ. When the gospel :was revealed, the faith "once delivered unto the saints" (Jude 3), there was no further need of the miraculous. In the passing away of the miraculous, there also would be the cessation of demon possession.
Notice that Zechariah not only foresaw the passing of demon possession, but also the passing of the prophets. Since prophecy stands for the entire miraculous operation of the Spirit, one should not be surprised that Zechariah combines the passing of both, the prophecy and
demon possession.
Verses 3 through 6 picture a time when there would be no genuine prophets. Thus, any claim to be a prophet would be an evident lie. Since the prophet would cease, any attempt to prophesy would produce shame. The garment worn by prophets would no longer be used as a means of deceit by false prophets. The garment identified the prophet. None wearing the garment of a prophet signified a time when there would be no genuine prophet to counterfeit. Verses 5 and 6 show the refusal to make any claim to prophesy. When questioned as to the wounds in his hands, he would lie about it by saying he had been wounded in the house of his friends. There was a practice among heathen priests of cutting themselves while attempting to prophesy, as seen in I Kings 18:28: "And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them."
This entire section of the book of Zechariah is intended to foretell the cessation of the prophet. The picture of no one being willing to admit to being a prophet establishes this fact. The truth of the matter is, if men believe the Bible, the claim on the part of any to be a prophet or to have any miraculous gift would be marked as a lie.
Any claim to speak in the. name of the Lord today by direct operation of the Holy Spirit is a lie (Zech. 13:3). The claim to speak in a tongue by a direct operation of the Holy Spirit is a lie. Zechariah foresaw the end of phophecy, and with it the end of the miraculous operation of the Holy Spirit. Whom shall I believe: one to whom the word of the Lord came, who is called a prophet and whose prophecy is dated (Zech. 1:1), or Pentecostals who falsely claim to have miraculous gifts? It is not difficult for me to accept both Daniel and Zechariah who, by inspiration, foresaw the cessation of the prophets, and with them the passing of miraculous gifts. Daniel 9 and Zechariah 13 confirm Paul in I Corinthians 1:5-8 and I Corinthians 13:1-13. Thus do both the Old and the New Testaments deny the claim today of Pentecostal speaking in tongues.

You forgot one thing. The names of idols are still in the land. In fact idolitry is more prevelent today then 50 years ago. You have to remove that part of the scripture if you are going to claim that it applies to this generation. In fact the main reason for prophets is for the denoucing of idols. So as long as there are idols or even the memory of idols, then there must be prophets.

As long as there is witchcraft there will be demon possession. Witchcraft is equal to idol worship and one leads to the other. The fact is that both are very real.

This sounds like you may have Obsessive Compulsive disorder. Your obsession is the irrational fear of being possessed by demons, your compulsion (which is an attempt to make the obsession go away) is to avoid anything that you think may cause you to be possessed, no matter how crazy it may seem (like the not going out at night one).

I have Obsessive Compulsive disorder too. One of the main problems I had with it was I had to say the exact same prayer every single day and night "perfectly". I was convinced if I didn't say my prayer "just right" God would not answer it (see, irrational), so I had to keep saying the same prayer over and over, which usually lasted for a few hours. Now I just say the Lord's Prayer, it's short, simple and to the point and it's easier to say without feeling I said it "wrongly". Another thing I do is having to check the front door is locked over and over, which is annoying and also embarassing. So far I've been able to decrease my Obsessive Compulsions by will power, but it usually manifest's itself in other ways, for example, instead of repeating my prayers, I have to say "pardon me, there is only One Lord" (I know, it sounds completely stupid) if I make a noise, other than me talking to God.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is not caused by demons or anything supernatural, it's a mental illness, believed to be caused by lack of seratonin in the brain. Seratonin is a chemical messenger, which transmitts signals from the outer to the inner regions of the brain. What normally happens is, for example, you're going out, so you open the front door, then subconsciously think "I don't want anyone to enter my house and steal anything, so I better lock the door" - you feel anxious about someone breaking in), then you lock the door and everything is fine, you go about your business. But with OCD sufferers, what happens is, they feel anxious about someone breaking into their home, so they lock the door, but the "anxiety" signal, which normally passes to the inner region of the brain and goes away, "bounces" back and you still feel anxiety, so you check the door, and the signal gets stuck in a loop, so you keep checking and checking, thinking "what if I checked it wrongly, what if I broke the handle when I checked that last time, what if..., what if..., what if...."

You should not feel stupid for doing things, which may seem crazy to you or other people, they don't know how you feel. If anyone tells you that you are stupid or whatever, ignore them.

Of course, I could be wrong and you may not have OCD, but another clue you may have it is the fact you posted this looking for reassurance that demons cannot possess you, which is another symptom of OCD. OCD sometimes comes coupled with another mental illness, such as depression.

Susan, I don't think you have anything to fear. You are clearly devoted to God; I think He'll keep the riff-raff at bay for you.

That said, if you walk in a city, don't walk around alone at night; demons may not be able to possess you, but people could mug you.

Isn't the belief that something "might open the door to the devil" itself a fair bit of a superstition?

The something that he was refering to is sin. Sin opens the door to the curse. The curse is carried on the shoulders of demons.

Remove the sin and you shut the door.
