  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does anyone know why Ferrets are banned from several states? I know Calif. just had a vote a few months back that left the law in place banning them anywhere in the State.

I used to own 2 ferrets (they are legal in Texas)... They were great little pets. Gave them to a friend when I started struggling to spend enough time playing with them and spending time with them.

They all come spayed or neutered when you buy them from a pet store... They are litterbox trainable... and just SO darn cute. :) I miss my ferrets.... I just wondered why they are being banned in some areas.

God Bless!!

Part of your quote there is exactly why they are banned in many states. While you gave them to a friend, many people will just let them loose outside, where they turn feral, possibly breed more feral ferrets and cause damage to crops, plants, homes, and kill other animals (possibly endangered species)

Ferrets are also banned in some cities in Texas and other states.

You would be hard pressed to find a ferrett that was not spayed or neutered. There are very few "ferret breeders" around... One of the largest is Marshall, which supplies about 90% of the market.... You literally can't find a ferret breeder who sells "sexually active" ferrets.

They are widely available in Texas... I am not familiar with any cities that have a ban, although I am sure a google search would reveal a few... I am just wondering why it is only a handful of places that keep the ban in effect, when the vast majority of the country seems able to survive with pet ferrets being allowed... They haven't taken over yet. You could apply the same logic to just about any pet, really... I still don't understand the concept of buying a baby alligator! Eventually you are going to have to get rid of it... Talk about a health risk... :)

Thanks for the reply! Take care!

While attending college I wrote a short paper on ferret legalization. I've been a ferret owner for many years. My home is blessed by three today. As previously stated in prior posts, the majority of ferrets are spayed or neutured and thus cannot contribute to repopulation in the wild. Ferrets are also extremely dependent on humans for food and shelter. Most ferrets that excape will perish within a few days whether it be from the elements, wild or domestic animals, or most likely, hit by a car. Ferrets cannot and will not survive in the wild. There are only a few states...California and Hawaii that currently ban ferrets. Some cities...such as New York City also ban ferrets. Ferrets are extremely misunderstood and if the public were better informed I doubt such bans would stand. Now I will get off my soapbox! LOL Dooks!!!
