Well gee...

I was getting so many instances of pop up windows and my internet searches were getting re-directed that I had to finally admit there was something seriously wrong my virus protection software hadn't picked up.

Got Malwarebytes - and it turns out I had a number of trojans on my computer. I do my banking on this computer. Scary. :o
