If you could change one teaching of the Bible what would it be?

  • I'd make all consenting sex okay

  • I'd make homosexual relationships/sex okay

  • I'd change the teachings on womens role in church and family

  • I'd kick out the creation story and write an obvious evolution story

  • I'd scrap all the references to God punishing people (i.e the Flood)

  • I'd scrap the list of harsh punishments (such as death by stoning) given in the OT

  • I'd scrap the stories of Israels killing of foreign tribes

  • I'd give Judas a second chance so he can repent and get saved

  • I'd make all lawyers and politicians hellbound regardless of faith

  • other (please specify)

Listen to this scenario:

GOD speaks to you one day and says that He would like you to make a decision for Him. He would like YOU to choose one part/aspect/teaching of the Bible to be changed or removed entirely. He then promises that once you have chosen that part/aspect/teaching would be removed from all the Bibles in the world and erased from all memories, as if that teaching never existed. Then whatever that part/aspect/teaching was and what it was related to would become true. (i.e If you removed all references to hell there would be no hell)

Now lets exclude anything to do with unbeleivers going to hell or with Satan existing or the Fall of Man!

What teaching/part/aspect would you change and why?

I would take out Pauls references to womens roles in the church: Those scriptures do not apply to society [western] today, when you read them in context. People, however, choose not to read them in context and blindly state them. That really peeves me off.

God Bless, metal.

I would love to change the teaching on womens role in church. I would love for women vicars/pastors to be biblical. But I really dont think it is and neither do a lot of women Christians I know. Even our female Christian Union leader thinks that the Ordination of Women in the Anglican church was the start of its downfall.

Not everyone who is opposed to women heads of church is motivated by sexism. (although I admit many are) Its just for me it is more important to be biblically correct than politically correct! and I havent yet heard an arguement FOR female vicars which is biblical and statifies me that God is in favour of women vicars.

In a christian family it is correct for a woman to be submitted to her husband... thats just the way God wants it. Im with natural law on that one.

As for women not allowed to speak in church etc, thats a load of rubbish in todays society. The book of Acts actually records women teaching men... So put the scripture into context before you quote it :) But thats not what this post is for.

God Bless, metal.

I wouldn't change one word. His ways are perfect. His thoughts higher than our own. How could I possibly think to improve upon what He has done?

Now I know this may not be the point of the question, but that is how I see it. I wouldn't change a thing!

I agree, both with the roles of women today and to people quoting scripture out of context to make their opinionated point.

I didn't vote. I don't want anything taken out. I would rather have some things expanded upon.
Example: How many times did Satan have to tempt Eve before she actually listened?
What was Jesus up to between the ages of 12 and 30?
I would like more detail.

I voted for the first one--all consenting sex--the only, I mean the only, reason I say this is because it seems that this area causes so many to stumble, causes so many to argue, causes so many to doubt, causes so many schisms, causes so many to be ashamed and causes so many to self-hate. (and I like sex)

I voted that Judas would be saved. It seemed like the only positive choice on the list. The rest seem to "make sin okay", or change ecclesial practices that were established for a reason. Neither would bear good fruit. But if I could help get one more person in Heaven, I'd do it without thinking twice.

That would have bad consequences - it would cheapen sex, (no longer make it a sign of a lifelong union) andI'm sure we'd have more single parent families, which is not what we should strive for. The ideal family has a loving mother and father. This doesnt always happen but we should try our hardest to make it a reality. FYI - I come from a single parent family, just so you know where I'm coming from.

actually, I agree with everything you said, but if God changed the rules, the outcome would not be so bad--in my humble opinion.
God bless you for wanting to strengthen me and my understanding of God--I appreciate it.

Remember, God's commands don't cause people to stumble. People's own lusts cause them to stumble. :pink:
