• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I don't currently suffer from unwanted vows, but had a similar obsession when I was younger. Please fight this using OCD techniques. Prayer is definitely a good way to address this, but please also use therapy, either with a professional or on your own. Acknowledge the unwanted thoughts and let the anxiety be there without trying to reason them away. Your anxiety will spike, but eventually it will decrease and things will start becoming clearer. Praying that you find freedom and peace!!

For those who have ocd and unwanted vows/oaths problem, can we please pray together and seek god's advise?
I am praying for you. I deal with intrusive thoughts. One thing I want you to know is that I believe God understands the difference between OCD unwanted thoughts we desperately try to fight off and wanted thoughts. He knows our hearts...Even when we dont. In the Bible it states, “ The Lord knows the thoughts of man, That they are a mere breath.” (Psalm 94:11)." Take all of your fears and turn them over to God.

With my OCD I now try to pray and say God, you know I don't want these thoughts, in fact they are the exact opposite of what my heart desires. In the Bible it says to take every thought captive and cast your cares. I am going to turn all of these lying thoughts over to you. If they do not line up with your word and will I do not want them. You know my heart Lord, even when I don't. I am trusting you with my day and whatever comes my way I am going to put all of my Faith and trust in you. Help me live my day according to your word, and not my own desires.

If thoughts come up after that I say that is a lying thought, I take it captive to you Lord. I then try not to dwell on it, because the more we dwell... the worse they become. I know this is easier said than done. Take ALL of your concerns to Jesus. He loves you, he can heal better than any physician. Jesus is the way.

If you ever need someone to talk to, please let me know. I am praying for you.

What a beautiful prayer! And the perfect way to release control of obsessive thoughts! I do not suffer from unwanted vows but it still encouraged me to turn over my other obsessions to God. Thanks for sharing!

I don't have this kind of OCD vows and thoughts, more fears of what I said in is blasphemy of holy spirit and now no matter hoe much I repent or seek Christ I cant be forgiven since its says "no forgivness" etc. And other Ocd themes. But praying for you all, I struggle too. I have raised my meds and changed my diet so it is helping me. I was debilitated could not work sleep or eat 2 months ago. I feel your pain. Praying.

I have experienced uncontrolled blasphemy thought of god/holy spirit previously, and have a lot of fear before too. But later I experienced something and feel that god know I don't want those blasphemy thought appear (as you know, this kind of illness have been experienced by many people previously). So I have more confidence now.

How to you face the vows issue? Have you ever follow the vows or just ignore them?

I don't think my obsession manifested itself as "vows," exactly. It was when I was a child, and my fear was that I would promise something to God that I didn't want to. I remember constantly being afraid that my mind would "slip up" and promise something - because of course, when we have OCD we give so much power to our subconscious thoughts, and forget that we are in control, and don't have to attribute power to things that we "might" have thought. No, NEVER follow the vows. That would be a compulsion. Your OCD brain is trying to get you to think that you need to. A general rule of thumb, for an obsession, is to think about what your OCD brain is afraid to have you do, and do the opposite. If it's afraid of having you NOT follow a vow, then you need to not follow it. You need to break the power that the obsessive thoughts have over your brain! That is, basically, a manner of therapy - refusing to give in to your compulsions.
