countryangel,

God wants everyone to go to heaven. That's the reason God the Son, Jesus, stepped out of heaven, became a man, and died on the cross. He did that so that all who would choose to “believe” in Him will be forgiven of their sins and have eternal life. Unfortunately, many choose to ignore the Gospel message, and live out their lives without Christ. Of course we know from God's Word that those who reject Christ will be doomed to an eternity in hell.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus tells us that anyone who believes in Him will have eternal life. He also says that no one can come to Him unless the Father draws him/her to Jesus, and He says that “anyone the Father gives to me, Jesus, will come to me”. John 6:37 Jesus said “all that the Father gives to me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will not turn away”

The fact that you are concerned about your relationship with God and want to believe in Jesus for forgiveness of your sin shows that God the Father is drawing you to Jesus. You may be thinking why God draws some to Jesus, but not others. The reason is that He draws those who are searching/seeking Him, which is what you are doing. We seek Him because He reached out to us by His gift of His Son to die on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, and gave us His Word, the Bible, as a record of the that Gospel message. That means that when people hear the preaching of the cross some will ignore it, some will reject it, and some will allow that message to draw them into a saving relationship with Christ.

There is much that could be said about “believing” in Jesus, and having “saving” faith. I do understand your confusion. I went through several miserable years in which I could not find a real saving faith because I did not understand the meaning of “believe.” I don't know what is preventing you from finding “saving” faith, but God knows and He does have an answer somewhere in His Word for you.

I don't know if you have read my testimony, but I'll share somethings from my experience that God showed my from His Word. I searched for assurance & peace of knowing that I was “saved” for many years. I read salvation tracts & books about how to have assurance of salvation. I listened to preachers on the radio and in my church. (This was before the internet was available). One bible verse that I kept hearing about was Romans 10:13, “Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” I don't know how many time I called on Jesus, telling Him that I was sorry for my sins and asking Him to save me, “in Jesus name.” Every time I said that prayer I would have a day or two of peace, but the doubts & fear soon returned and I found myself living in a sense of dreadful fear. I thought that I would never know for sure that I had really believed and was saved. I would ask myself if I really “believed,” or did really mean business with God, or did I have enough faith, or did I really commit my life to Christ.

My problem was that my faith was focused on the things “I” was doing to get God to save me instead of focusing on what Jesus had already done on the cross to save me. The day I gave up on the thing I was doing and turned to God's Word to find the answer is when God showed me that it wasn't about me, it wasn't about my prayers or my promises, but it is all about what Jesus did on the cross. It was as though the Holy Spirit turned on the light and “I got it.” When I saw that Jesus had already done all that God required for my sin to be forgiven, then the focus of my faith immediately changed from all the things I was doing to the finished work of Jesus on the cross. That was the moment I had “saving faith,” and God Himself gave me that faith when He opened my spiritually blind eyes to the truth of the Gospel. Then I found myself talking to Jesus as though He was right there in the room with me; thanking Him for dying on the cross to pay for my sins and asking Him tom change me. IOW, Romans 10:14; "how shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed?"......(We must believe on Him before we call on Him)

The following scripture was one that God used to help me. 1 Cor. 1:18, “for the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness, but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. May I suggest that you memorize that verse and dwell on that message until it sinks into your soul. God might use that scripture to help you focus your faith on the cross. And, the amount of faith is not important, but if the object of your faith is Jesus' death on the cross & His shed blood there, the slightest amount of faith is "saving" faith.

I have more to say, but the hour is late. Don't give up on God, keep seeking after Him.

Don

I am trying to figure out that f I acknowledge that Jesus is God does that mean that I am saved?

Isn't that exactly what it says? Let's take a look at that passage.

1 John 4:13-15
"By this we know that we abide in Him, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son as Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God."

I can see how the first verse would cause self-examination. "I don't feel the Spirit, so maybe I don't have the Spirit". But let's move on. God has sent Jesus as Savior, not condemner, of the world. Jn 3.17 says:

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

His predisposition is to save, not to condemn. This is why He came, and now, having given so much, would He not be striving to save you rather than condemn?

And then the third verse, which should be a comfort and affirmation.

I continue to think this is a matter of trust, not unbelief. You believe the right things, but you need to let go and trust God with not only your salvation, but your heart and life. He can take care of everything, even better than we. You really want Him in the car with you, giving directions.

Start with a commitment. Give Him yourself. Spend more time in 1Jn 4, and look at the love he talks about. We love because He first loved us. That's where the faith that works through love begins. Camp there, and let it change you. It probably will take time, so be patient and persistent. "No one who puts his trust in Him will be disappointed" (Rom 10).

Daughter, Do you know Jesus? If the answer is yes, then you know the answer to your question. Right?
If the answer is no, then get to know Him. From your OP it sounds like you know church, and what their teachings are but you don't know Jesus. Common mistake...have a blessed weekend...

What is saving faith? Well, the apostle James makes it pretty clear, I think. It is faith that affects our behaviour. Imagine you are going to take a ride in a speed boat. The driver of the boat tells you it is important to wear a life-jacket: it could save your life. But he isn't going to force anyone to put a life-jacket on. It's up to you whether you'll wear one or just sit on it instead. Some of the others do just that. They recognize the life-jackets could be important, but the jackets are uncomfortable, and they look kinda' silly, and the possibility of drowning seems very unlikely, so they use them as seat cushions rather than putting the jackets on. Others, though, are more concerned about the danger of drowning. And they take the warning of the boat driver quite seriously. They actually believe their life is in danger from all the water that surrounds them. They also believe the life-jacket will save them should they fall into the water. And so, they put on the life jacket even though it is uncomfortable and may look a bit silly.

The people who sat on the life jackets are those who have just an intellectual belief about life-jackets. They agree that life-jackets can save lives, but their belief is a thing of the mind, not the heart. Their belief does not have any corresponding significant effect on their behaviour. It is just theoretical, really. Those people who put on the jackets, however, had a "saving faith" in the power of the life-jackets to keep them from drowning. Their belief touched the heart of who they were and prompted corresponding action. And this is what the apostle James says is the distinguishing feature of real, saving faith:

James 2:17-20
17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
18 But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe--and tremble!
20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?

The risk believers run in considering James's words is that they can begin to think that works, good deeds, are part of how they are saved. But this isn't actually what James is saying. He is simply acknowledging that if you really believe a thing, it always shows up in how you act. And this is what Jesus said, too:

Matthew 7:17-21
17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.
19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
21 "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.

You know, the issue isn't just one of belief. God's first and great commandment to us is to love Him with all of our being. (Matt. 22:36, 37) It is out of obeying this command that all the other stuff is supposed to flow. But I know people who have obeyed God's commands for decades without ever really loving Him. Isn't that weird? They read their Bibles, and pray, and go to church, and even pay tithe, but they don't actually love God. But, you know, all of this religious stuff done out of the wrong motive is totally useless. God doesn't accept obedience from us that isn't motivated by love for Him. Read 1 Corinthians 13:1-3.

Selah.

if i believe that Jesus is Lord and God. does that mean i am saved?

Hey, Countryangel. Great question! The answer is simply yes! That's good news huh?

There are several examples throughout the Bible that provide an answer to your question. I think the most famous of them is the one from the Gospel of John chapter 3 that Singpeace mentioned. I would like add to everything that has already been mentioned by quoting an event that can be found in Acts chapter 16:

"The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He then brought them out and asked, 'Sirs, what must I do to be saved?'
They replied, 'Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved.'" (Acts 16: 29-31a NIV)

The answer that Paul and Silas gave to the prison guard was simple, and he believed. For many people however, it is difficult to accept that there are no strings attached. The truth is that Jesus took care of the difficult part so that we could focus on the simple part. I recommend reading that section in Acts as a whole because it is such an amazing event.

I wouldn’t separate 1 John 4:15 from the rest of 4:7 ff. Love and the presence of the Holy Spirit are all grouped together with this confession. Indeed 4:13 says we know we abide in him because of the presence of the Spirit. So I don’t think the confession of 4:15 is intended as a test for whether God abides in you, but more as a description of how things work. Our relationship from God comes from faith, and love and obedience from that. But I wouldn’t turn confession into a test to see whether someone is a Christian.
