Legend
notes that when we do things for other people that fixes their problems that though they strengthen us, they ironically weaken those who we "fix," cheapening the experience for them. She goes on and on about it, but the more I think upon her words, the more I can see that this may be why God allows us to experience such trials and imperfections in who we are and doesn't snap his fingers to fix them.
Fixing our problems by our actions gives our lives meaning. Just as failure to fix them also gives our lives meaning. Our actions have to have real consequences.
Let's take a rapist. Now, God could "snap his fingers" and alter the rapist's mind so that he did not commit rape. But rape is his choice, and now you are taking that choice away from him. For ill, a rapist is who and what he is by his choice to rape. Do we really want a God who is a Control Freak and messes with our minds so that we only make choices He wants us to make?
Similarly, for the victim, who and what she is is determined by how she copes with the rape. God can help, but ultimately the choices must be up to the victim.
